Even hardware vendor supplied portable messagepassing interfaces such as MPI and PVM are not sufficient becausetheir rigid interfaces often preclude the ability to exploitmachine-specific features and employ machine independentoptimizations. IRONMAN eliminates the overhead of portability byidentifying the minimal, basic characteristics of communication on anymachine and abstracting them into the interface, thereby facilitatingplatform-specific mappings of these abstractions that are best suitedto the machine and even the application. We introduce the IRONMANinterface, its use, and its implementation. We demonstrate IRONMAN'sability to remain portable while delivering good performance forbenchmarks on the Intel Paragon and the Cray T3D.

This paper is available upon request.
<inc srv "/research/projects/zpl/footer.html">

[<!WA1><!WA1>ZPL | <!WA2><!WA2>UW CSE |<!WA3><!WA3>UW]
<!WA4><!WA4>zpl-info@cs.washington.edu
