In general, we are interested inensuring that complex software systems exhibit specific properties.Recently, the three properties that we have focused on are: <!WA2><!WA2><!WA2><!WA2><ahref=http://www.cs.washington.edu/research/projects/safety/www/index.html>software safety (<!WA3><!WA3><!WA3><!WA3> NancyLeveson), which concerns how to guarantee that systems withembedded software cause no harm to human life, the environment, orproperty; ease of evolution (<!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><ahref=http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/notkin>David Notkin),which concerns reducing the costs and complexity of changing softwaresystems over time; and real-time attributes (<!WA5><!WA5><!WA5><!WA5><ahref=http://www.cs.washington.edu/people/faculty/shaw.html>AlanShaw), which concerns understanding and guaranteeing that certaintiming constraints are satisfied.
In addition to continuing work on these and related properties, ourcurrent work is characterized in two ways. First, we are interestedin understanding how properties interact: for instance, how does one(or can one) build safe systems that can be modified easily? Second, what are the problems that arise in the construction of real softwaresystems? We have a history of working on such systems; our group hashad interactions with the FAA on TCAS, the collison avoidance systemnow found on all planes of over 30 passengers, with Microsoft onhelping them with an experimental restructuring of their 1.2 millionline Excel product, and with local medical device companies who needto demonstrate that their products satisfy both safety and timingrequirements.
Faculty, students, etc. interested primarily in software engineeringare listed below, but other people in the department dabble insoftware engineering research and education from time to time.
<!WA6><!WA6><!WA6><!WA6><!WA7><!WA7><!WA7><!WA7>People
<!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8> <!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9>Courses
<!WA10><!WA10><!WA10><!WA10> <!WA11><!WA11><!WA11><!WA11>Various bibliographies
<!WA12><!WA12><!WA12><!WA12> Miscellaneous<menu>
<!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13> Software engineering conference announcements
<!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14> More software engineering conference announcements
<!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15> 18th International Conference on Software Engineering
<!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16> 17th International Conference on Software Engineering
<!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17> Software Engineering Information outside UW</menu>

<!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18> <!WA19><!WA19><!WA19><!WA19>

Back to <!WA20><!WA20><!WA20><!WA20>UW CSE Home Page

notkin@cs.washington.edu
