The University's annual operatingbudget is roughly $1.4 billion, 18% of which comes from theState.
The University of Washington is one of the nation's premier researchuniversities. For more than twenty years, UW has ranked among the topfive institutions in annual Federal research obligations. (Currently-- 1994 data is the most recent available -- UW is second behind JohnsHopkins, with MIT and Stanford in third and fourth positions.Currently UW ranks fifth in industrial research support.) The UWfaculty includes eighty-six members of the National Academies, eight MacArthur Foundation award winners, and fourNobel prize winners in the past decade. Fifty seven junior facultyhave won NSF/Presidential Young Investigator Awards. A number ofprograms are ranked among the top dozen in their fields, includingAtmospheric Sciences,Bioengineering,Cell and Developmental Biology,Computer Science & Engineering,Dentistry,Ecology Evolution & Behavior,Geography,Microbiology,Neurosciences,Nursing,Oceanography,Pharmacology,Physiology,Psychology,Public Health & Community Medicine,Sociology,Statistics/Biostatistics, and Zoology.
The<!WA5><!WA5><!WA5>UW home pageincludes an<!WA6><!WA6><!WA6>official profile,<!WA7><!WA7><!WA7>photographic tour,and<!WA8><!WA8><!WA8>pictorial history.

<!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><imgwidth=153 height=144src="http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/lazowska/photos/sptm.jpeg">
Steam Powered Turing Machine
Computer Science & Engineering Mural

The UW Department of Computer Science & Engineering
The UW <!WA10><!WA10><!WA10>Department of Computer Science & Engineering was establishedas an inter-college<!WA11><!WA11><!WA11>graduateprogram in 1967. In 1975 anundergraduate program in<!WA12><!WA12><!WA12>ComputerScience was added and departmentalstatus was conferred. A second undergraduate program, in<!WA13><!WA13><!WA13>ComputerEngineering, was added in 1989 when the department moved to the <!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><ahref="http://www.engr.washington.edu">College of Engineering. Thedepartment currently has roughly 30 <!WA15><!WA15><!WA15>facultymembers, 30 <!WA16><!WA16><!WA16>staff members, 150 <!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><ahref="http://www.cs.washington.edu/people/grads">graduate students, and 300 <!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><ahref="http://www.cs.washington.edu/people/ugrads">undergraduate students.
The department is ranked among the top ten in the nation. FifteenCSE faculty members have won <!WA19><!WA19><!WA19>Presidential/NSF Young Investigator Awards, one of the highesttotals nationally regardless of discipline, and more than 1/4 of theUniversity of Washington's total of this prestigious award.
