opportunities.<p><b>UW's graduates form the next generation of Washington'sleaders</b> in business, engineering, science, and government.<p><b>These graduates staff high-technology industry</b>.The University of Washington is the largest supplier of newcollege graduates in the nation to Microsoft.The University of Washington also is the largest supplier ofnew college graduates in the nation to Intel -- Intel has38 "Strategic Universities," and UW is #1.The UW Department of Computer Science & Engineering isessentially the only supplier to a number of major regionalfirms such as DECwest Engineering, Geoworks/Seattle, andTera Computer.Every year, UW CSE sends more than 100 outstanding ComputerScience and Computer Engineering majors into the PugetSound area workforce.<p><b>Programs such as CSE import new technology to theNorthwest</b>. UW CSE brought the Internet to theNorthwest 15 years ago, when a DECsystem-20 in ourdepartment became the first computer in a several stateregion to be attached to what was then ARPANET.(Today, University of Washington Computing & Communicationsoperates the attachment point for NorthWestNet, the principalInternet service provider in the Pacific Northwest.)At about the same time, <!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><a href="http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/lazowska/impact/nwlis.html">theoriginal Very LargeScale Integrated (VLSI) circuit designers inthe Northwest were trained in UW CSE</a>, in a programco-sponsored by UW CSE, Boeing, and Caltech.Graduates of that first course built the firstmicroprocessor VAX, the MicroVAX-I, at DECwestEngineering.<p><b>These programs create new technology</b>.In the 1970s, the Pascal compiler for DigitalEquipment Corporation's then-new VAX computer wasbuilt by UW CSE; the existence of this compileris given significant credit for the VAX's rapidpenetration of the academic market.<!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><a href="http://www.webcrawler.com">WebCrawler</a>,one of the first search engines for theWorld Wide Web,<!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><a href="http://webcrawler.com/WebCrawler/Facts/WCStory.html">was designed, implemented, and deployedby UW CSE graduate student Brian Pinkerton</a>; WebCrawlerwas sold to America Online.<!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><a href="http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/salisbur/sundodger.html">SundodgerScout, a football scouting program offering breakthroughs inflexibility and visualization</a>, was conceived and implementedin 1995 by two CSE graduate students working with theUniversity of Washington football department; Sundodger Scoutis credited by the Husky coaches with contributing considerablyto the team's remarkable success (Pac-10 co-champion)coming off two years of probation.Collaborative research in computer graphics between the Universityof Washington and Microsoft has led to new products and to newtechnologies incorporated in existing products --<!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><a href=http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/lazowska/impact/shirt.html>at the 1996SIGGRAPH conference</a>, 15 papers (1/3 of the total presented atthis premier international conference) were from UW and/orMicrosoft: 5 from UW, 7 from Microsoft, and 3 joint.UW CSE computer systems technology for x86 applicationperformance tuning is currently being licensed to a numberof major computer system vendors by UW's Office of TechnologyTransfer.OTT recently sold to Digital EquipmentCorporation patented UW CSE computer systems technologyfor the design of high-performanceprocessors incorporating simultaneous multithreading.The<!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><a href="http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/segal/brute.html">BRUTEAI-based datamining technology</a> has been licensedto a number of companies by OTT.<p><b>These programs attract new industry</b>.
