The Group collaborates extensively withother LCS researchers.
We take a pragmatic approach by focusing on three primarygoals: simplifying the parallel and distributed programmingprocess, building efficient distributed systems withoff-the-shelf technology that also can be used for parallelsupercomputing, and building scalable, flexible,high-performance storage services for these distributedsystems.
The first goal is addressed by a software-basedshared-memory system, called Autopilot, that combines theease of shared-memory programming with the physicalscalability of distributed systems. Autopilot's novelaspects include the automatic management of locality andwork distribution.
Secondly, the <!WA6>Exokernel is a novel operating systemmicrokernel that provides low-overhead protectedcommunication and a user-customizable kernel interface.Efficient communication is an especially valuable mechanismfor structuring complex systems, since it allows thesystems to be decomposed into separate protection domains.By allowing user customization, applications can set theirown policies instead of being harnessed in a default kernelpolicy.
Our research into high-performance storage systems isrepresented by the Logical Disk (LD), which separates fileand disk management so that different file systems can berun efficiently over the same LD. We also are extending thethree goals to include mobile distributed systems.

<!WA7><!WA8><!WA9><!WA10><!WA11><!WA12>
