<TITLE> Collaborative Software Engineering</TITLE><H1> Collaborative Software Engineering </H1><p><STRONG> Sponsors: </STRONG><!WA0><A HREF = "http://www.cise.nsf.gov/iris/DBEShome.html">NSF Database and Expert Systems Program</A>(IRI-9408708)<p><STRONG> Researchers </STRONG>:<!WA1><A HREF = "http://www.cs.unc.edu/~dewan"> Prasun Dewan, </A><!WA2><A HREF = "http://www.cs.umn.edu/~riedl"> John Riedl, </A><!WA3><A HREF = "http://www.cs.unc.edu/~munson"> Jon Munson </A></BR><p><STRONG> Description </STRONG>:This research covers two closely related areas ofcollaboration technology: collaborative tools and infrastructures.In the area ofcollaborative toolsit is addressing thepotential of these tools for making<!WA4><A HREF = "ftp://ftp.cs.unc.edu/pub/users/dewan/papers/cse.ps.Z">distributed collaborative software engineering tasks</A>more concurrent, thereby allowing thesetime-consuming tasks to be completed significantly more quickly.In the area of<!WA5><A HREF = "ftp://ftp.cs.unc.edu/pub/users/dewan/papers/trends.ps.Z">collaborative infrastructures,</A>it is addressingsupport for near-automatic generation of efficient, collaborative tools,thereby significantly reducing the tremendous amount of effort required to program these tools manually. These two efforts arerelated since the infrastructure is being used to build the toolsand the tools are being used to evaluate the infrastructure.Some of the specific issues being addressed include<!WA6><A HREF = "ftp://ftp.cs.unc.edu/pub/users/dewan/papers/access-control.ps.Z">security</A>,<!WA7><A  HREF = "ftp://ftp.cs.unc.edu/pub/users/dewan/papers/cc.ps.Z">consistency</A>,<!WA8><A  HREF = "ftp://ftp.cs.unc.edu/pub/users/dewan/papers/undo.ps.Z">undo</A>,computer support for gathering softwareengineering requirements, and asynchronous software engineeringmeetings. The research is using an experimental method whereinthe infrastructure and tools are being implemented and usedin case studies. The research results includetaxonomies of collaboration scenarios;<!WA9><A HREF = "ftp://ftp.cs.unc.edu/pub/users/dewan/papers/prin.ps.Z">principles</A>,<!WA10><A HREF = "ftp://ftp.cs.unc.edu/pub/users/dewan/papers/edit.ps.Z">interaction models,</A><!WA11><A HREF = "ftp://ftp.cs.unc.edu/pub/users/dewan/papers/framework.ps.Z">software abstractions,</A>and<!WA12><A HREF = "ftp://ftp.cs.unc.edu/pub/users/dewan/papers/arch.ps.Z">architectures</A>that support these scenarios;and evaluation of the infrastructure and tools being developed.
