Rhythm in Music and Speech

Rhythm in Music and Language
Description:
Music and spoken language appear to be organized around hierarchicallystructured patterns of strong and weak accents - that is, they haverhythm. People are expert at recognizing the rhythmic structurein music and speech and guiding their own musical and linguistic behaviorto match (that is, be entrained to) a perceived rhythm. Yet this capacityis not well understood, and no computer program even approaches it. Ourproject is concerned (1) with experimental investigation of the perceptionand production of rhythm in people and (2) with the development of acomputational model of the learning and processing of simple rhythmicpatterns. The evolving model is based on the idea that periodicities inthe world must be captured by periodicities in the activity of thecomputational device which is responsible for dealing with it.
In more general terms, this project is concerned with methods forestablishment of a `temporal lock' between a computational device and theenvironment, that is, with entrainment between the realtime activity of acomputer and the world. We suspect that such temporal locking is essentialfor human-like speech and music behavior -- and probably many otherbehaviors as well: catching a ball, dribbling a basketball, pushing a childon a swing, and so forth.

Associated Faculty: <!WA0>Robert Port,<!WA1>Michael Gasser
Associated Postdoc: Mauri Kaipainen (1996-7)
Associated Graduate Students: <!WA2>Doug Eck,<!WA3>PaulKienzle,<!WA4>FredCummins (Linguistics)
Affiliated Projects: Accent Reduction Project:<!WA5>DianeKewley-Port,<!WA6>Robert Port
Support: Office of Naval Research
 For more information <!WA7>click here
<!WA8><!WA9> Return to Computer Science Research Page
