Thegroup is planning a new thrust in the area of wirelessvideo networking. This activity will have an architecturalcomponent and a detailed technical component. The latter, which is somewhat novel, is exploring software-basedapproaches to (de)modulation. On the broader front, theTNS group is developing a deeper understanding of theforces shaping the emerging Information Infrastructure. Our specific concern is that the resultant industry andregulary structure be scalable and support rapidinnovation.
The ViewStation program is investigating the applicationsand system implications - both <AHREF="http://www.tns.lcs.mit.edu/vs/vunet.html">hardwareand <!WA2><AHREF="http://www.tns.lcs.mit.edu/vs/vusystem.html">software- of the pending transition from computation intensiveapplications to media and network intensive environments. While our interests extend to audio and graphics, much ofthe effort is focused on full motion video, whichrepresents the medium with the most demanding through-putrequirement. Specifically, the project investigates thedesign and deployment of distributed video systems. Thisproject is integrating Desk Area Network (DAN) technology, under development within Aurora, with a very softwareintensive approach to the capture, editing, transmission, storage, and display of full motion video sequences.
Aurora's main objective is the exploration and evaluationof technologies that support operation at or near gigabitper second bandwidths. Our contributions to Aurora, whichare mostly related to gigabit endworking, include work onlocal distribution, host interfacing, and end systemprotocol software.
Aurora is one of five networking testbeds funded by theCorporation for the National Research Initiatives under agrant from the <!WA3>National ScienceFoundation and <!WA4>ARPA.This collaboration involves <!WA5><ahref=http://web.mit.edu>MIT, <!WA6><ahref=http://www.ibm.com>IBM, <!WA7><ahref=http://www.bellcore.com>Bellcore, and the <!WA8><ahref=http://www.upenn.edu>University of Pennsylvania. The project has already commissioned a wide area network, through which the four partner sites are linked by several600 Mb/s trunks.

<!WA9><!WA10><!WA11><!WA12><!WA13><!WA14>
