<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>ESEG at UMCP Home Page</TITLE></HEAD><BODY><H1>Experimental Software Engineering Group</h1><!WA0><IMG SRC="http://www.cs.umd.edu/Images/Maryland_Bar_Top.gif" ALT="-----------------------------------" HEIGHT=6 WIDTH=570><P> The Experimental Software Engineering Group (ESEG) of the Universityof Maryland views software engineering as a laboratory science.Specific research projects are centered around formalizingvarious aspects of (a) the Quality Improvement Paradigm (<!WA1><a href="ftp://ftp.cs.umd.edu/pub/sel/papers/tr22.94.ps">QIP</a>),(b) the Experience Factory (<!WA2><a href="ftp://ftp.cs.umd.edu/pub/sel/papers/fact.ps">EF</a>), and (c) the Goal/Question/Metric approach (<!WA3><a href="ftp://ftp.cs.umd.edu/pub/sel/papers/gqm.ps">GQM</a>). The QIP is aimed at building descriptive models of software processes,products, and other forms of experience, experimenting with andanalyzing these models, in order to build improvement-oriented,packaged, prescriptive models.
