Though our implementation of a generic distributed system usesJava, TCP/IP, and the Web, the ideas are directly applicable to anydistributed (possibly object-oriented) system that supports messages andthreads. A key concern is the development of reliable distributedapplications by composing existing and created software components instructured ways. We are solving the problems and influencing thestandards of distributed component technology for the user and developerfor the Internet of the 21st century.
An <!WA2> executivesummary of the Infospheres Project is available.

<!WA5>Release 1.0b1 of theInfosphere Infrastructure (II) is now available!

The Caltech Infospheres Infrastructure (II) is a distributed systemframework that is implemented in Java. It provides a generic objectmodel and a variety of messaging models (asynchronous, synchronous, and remote procedure calls). This system is freely available, sothat researchers and developers can develop lightweight distributedsystems that can leverage open standards and the World Wide Web.Caltech is developing methodologies that take advantage of thesystem's design so that reasoning on entire distributed systems isfeasible. With these methodologies, one can say something about thereliability, completeness, and robustness of a distributed system as awhole. The II is being extended to support interoperability withother distributed system models and to utilize emerging standards inthe Java domain. Because the system is designed and implemented in ageneric manner, the ideas, algorithms, and theories developed withinthe II framework are directly applicable to existing distributedsystems and frameworks.<!-- Group organization; give them context!
