We are aconsortium of researchers, developers, and educators, spanning theacademic, public, and private sectors, exploring a variety of problemsrelated to a <b>distributed digital library forgeographically-referenced information.</b></p><p><b>Distributed</b> means the library's components may be spread acrossthe Internet, as well as coexisting on a single desktop.<b>Geographically-referenced</b> means that all the objects in thelibrary will be associated with one or more regions (``footprints'') onthe surface of the Earth.</p><p>The centerpiece of the Alexandria Project is the <b>Alexandria DigitalLibrary</b> (ADL), an online information system inspired by the Map andImagery Laboratory (MIL) in the <!WA1><A HREF="http://www.library.ucsb.edu">Davidson Library</A> at the <!WA2><A HREF="http://www.ucsb.edu">University of California, Santa Barbara</A>.
