Whereasconventional chemistry relies on bulk phenomena such as diffusion tocreate self-assembling structures, Molecular Robotics manipulatesstructures by applying external forces and precisely positioning atomsand molecules. It is a revolutionary technology, which attempts toprovide fine control over the structure of matter, analogous to thefine control we can now exert upon the bits and bytes of informationstructures. Future applications range from very fast and smallcomputers to nanorobots and self-replicating machines. Nanorobots mightbe programmed to recognize and repair specific kinds of cells, and toperform a large variety of other tasks that are now impossible toaccomplish. Large structures might be built by using massiveparallelism. The technology has the potential for major scientific andpractical breakthroughs. However, today we lack most of the toolsnecessary for realizing the dreams of Molecular Robotics. Researchopportunities abound. </P> <CENTER><BR><B>Contacts:</B><BR><BR><!WA2><A HREF="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/html/requicha.html">Prof. Ari Requicha</A><BR>Laboratory for Molecular Robotics<BR><!WA3><A HREF="http://www.usc.edu/dept/cs/index.html">Computer Science Department</A><BR><!WA4><A HREF="http://www.usc.edu">University of Southern California</A><BR> Los Angeles, CA 90089-0781<BR><BR><!WA5><A HREF="mailto:lmr@lipari.usc.edu">lmr@lipari.usc.edu</A><BR>Telephone: (213) 740-4502<BR>Fax: (213) 740-4502</P><BR><BR></CENTER><CENTER> <TABLE><TR VALIGN="TOP" ALIGN="CENTER"><TD><!WA6><A HREF="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/html/history.html"><!WA7><IMG SRC="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/graphics/But_Help.gif" BORDER="0" WIDTH="58" HEIGHT="58"><BR><BR>History</A></TD><TD><!WA8><A HREF="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/html/research.html"><!WA9><IMG SRC="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/graphics/But_RR.gif" BORDER="0" WIDTH="58" HEIGHT="58"><BR><BR>Research</A></TD><TD><!WA10><A HREF="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/html/facilities.html"><!WA11><IMG SRC="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/graphics/But_UnivInfor.gif" BORDER="0" WIDTH="58" HEIGHT="58"><BR><BR>Facilities</A></TD><TD><!WA12><A HREF="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/html/people.html"><!WA13><IMG SRC="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/graphics/But_People.gif" BORDER="0" WIDTH="58" HEIGHT="58"><BR><BR>People</A></TD><TD><!WA14><A HREF="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/html/links.html"><!WA15><IMG SRC="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/graphics/But_Showcase.gif" BORDER="0" WIDTH="58" HEIGHT="58"><BR><BR>Links</A></TD><TD><!WA16><A HREF="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/html/cool.html"><!WA17><IMG SRC="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/graphics/But_WayCool.gif" BORDER="0" WIDTH="58" HEIGHT="58"><BR><BR>Cool Stuff</A></TD></TR></TABLE> </CENTER><!--"USCwebFooter.html" --><PRE> </PRE><CENTER><NOBR><!WA18><IMG SRC="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/graphics/Foot_Bar.gif" ALIGN=MIDDLE WIDTH="243"HEIGHT="3"><!WA19><A HREF="http://www.usc.edu/"><!WA20><IMG SRC="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/graphics/Foot_Seal.gif" ALT="USCweb" BORDER=0 ALIGN=MIDDLE WIDTH="45" HEIGHT="45"></A><!WA21><IMG SRC="http://alicudi.usc.edu:80/~lmr/graphics/Foot_Bar.gif" ALIGN=MIDDLE WIDTH="243" HEIGHT="3"></NOBR></CENTER><H6 ALIGN=CENTER>Copyright &copy; 1996 The University of Southern California.
