Weihl</b></a>,<br>Associate Professor <br>of Computer Science and Engineering</address> </tr></table></center><body><p>Researchers in the Large-scale Parallel Software Groupdevelop new and easier methods of writing efficientparallel programs. Some of the projects in the group areconducted jointly with the <!WA4><A HREF="http://www.pdos.lcs.mit.edu/">Parallel and DistributedOperating Systems</a> Group.<p>Current research is conducted in three major areas. First,work that was begun on the Prelude system is continuing inthe AutoPilot project with compiler modifications for C andother widely used languages. The goal of this work is todevelop compiler and runtime system mechanisms that raisethe level of abstraction of parallel programs, thus makingit easier to port or tune a program.<p>Secondly, we are studying architectural and operatingsystem support for low-overhead communication inmulti-programmed, multi-user systems. Our goal is tocombine the speed of today's high-performancemultiprocessors with the protection guarantees ofdistributed systems.<p>Thirdly, we are developing new techniques forhigh-performance simulation of multiprocessor systems.
