It is designed for control dominated, reactivesystems under timing constraints. Chinook maps a behavioral descriptionto the user's target architecture, by filling in all the details neededto build the complete system. This enables designers to make informed designdecisions at the high level early in the design cycle, rather than reiterateafter having worked out all the low level details. Retargetability willnot only make the designs more maintainable but also enables the designerto take advantage of new technologies, instead of being tied down by legacycode.

Chinook is currently under active development in a new generation. Currentlywe are actively working on software architecture synthesis, interprocessorcommunication synthesis, and efficient and accurate co-simulation. Moredetails will become available shortly.

Chinook is characterized as follows. It meets timing constraints, ratherthan trying to maximize average performance or utilization. It assumesmanual partitioning, because we believe the issues are too intricateand sometimes not even technical. We want the designers to evaluate differentarchitectures, rather than forcing a single fixed Processor-Bus-ASICarchitecture. We synthesize software architectures rather than rely onoff the shelf real-time kernels because they discourage retargeting.

The first version of the Chinook co-synthesis tool was operational inNovember 1993. ``<!WA3><!WA3><!WA3><!WA3><!WA3><!WA3><!WA3><!WA3><!WA3><!WA3>Version roe'' was shownat DAC (Design Automation Conference) in San Diego in June 1994. Its mainfeatures include automatic connection between the processor and peripheraldevices, generation of sequential code from a concurrent description, andsynthesizing device drivers. Its inputs Verilog and outputs a hardwarenetlist needed to connect the hardware components together and the softwareprogram to run on the processor. The main topics include the interfacingproblem between hardware and software components, scheduling under timingconstraints, and partitioning of functionality.

An improved version was demonstrated at the NATO summer school on HW/SWCodeDesign, in Tremezzo, Italy June 19-30, 1995. It incorporated severalmore interface synthesis techniques, including memory-mapped I/O, moreefficient code generation, and a new simulator.

Chinookers

Faculty

<!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><!WA4>Gaetano Borriello

Graduate students

<!WA5><!WA5><!WA5><!WA5><!WA5><!WA5><!WA5><!WA5><!WA5><!WA5>Pai Chou

<!WA6><!WA6><!WA6><!WA6><!WA6><!WA6><!WA6><!WA6><!WA6><!WA6>Ross Ortega

<!WA7><!WA7><!WA7><!WA7><!WA7><!WA7><!WA7><!WA7><!WA7><!WA7>Ken Hines

<!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8>Ian MacDuff

Recent Ph.D.'s

<!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9>Elizabeth A.
