For more than a decade,I have been interested in the application of probability theory toproblems in Artificial Intelligence traditionally handled by logics,grammars and heuristics. In AI's earliest days, it was widely heldthat complexity problems and the unavailability of meaningfulprobability distributions made this impractical. In the last decade,this opinion has changed. Two majorinternational conferences, one organized by <!WA5><AHREF="http://www.auai.org/"> the Association for Uncertaintyin AI</a> and one organized by<!WA6><A HREF="http://www.vuse.vanderbilt.edu/~dfisher/ai-stats/society.html">the Society for Artificial Intelligence and Statistics </A>,discuss probabilistic and statistical AI, andstatistical approaches to AI problems have entered the AImainstream. </A><P>Together with colleagues and students, I have looked atprobabilistic approaches to default inference, diagnosis, temporalreasoning, natural language, and classification. My work appearsin major journals and severalnational and international workshops and conferences. I have alsoedited a special issue of<!WA7><A HREF = "http://calypso.cs.uregina.ca/CI/ci.html"> Computational Intelligence </A> journal on thephilosophy of nonmonotonic reasoning, featuring a target article by <!WA8><A HREF = "http://www.cs.rochester.edu/u/kyburg/">Henry E.
