Classicaliterative methods and most multigrid methods only work effectivelywhen the system is positive definite. These methods can also bemade effective when the real or symmetric part of the operatoris positive definite. On the other hand, in the indefinite casedirect methods which attempt to preserve the `sparseness' of thesystem may encounter (very) small `pivots.' Thus, this is a challengingproblem which effectively mixes concepts and procedures from linearalgebra and elliptic partial differential equations.
