After receiving his PhD from the University ofWashington in 1990, he took a brief respite from Seattle between 1990and 1993 to experiment with post-industrial culture in the Northeast. In 1993, he returned to the Northwest for the coffee.
Bershad does research in operating systems, distributed systems, networking, parallel systems, and architecture. A lot of his work hasappeared in TOCS, SOSP, ASPLOS and ISCA, although he can't seem to get aSIGMETRICS paper published to save his life.
Besides working, Bershad runs, plays squash, and hangs out on thestairmaster.

Projects include

<!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8><!WA8> SPIN -- ExtensibleOperating Systems
<!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9><!WA9> Mobile Computing .
<!WA10><!WA10><!WA10><!WA10><!WA10><!WA10>Memory management for operating systems and architectures.
<!WA11><!WA11><!WA11><!WA11><!WA11><!WA11>The Midway Project. (at <!WA12><!WA12><!WA12><!WA12><!WA12><!WA12>Carnegie Mellon)
<!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13><!WA13>ParallelNetworking for Scalable I/O
<!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><!WA14><AHREF="file://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/bershad//afs/cs/usr/bershad/Papers/Rocky/index.html">Rocky2 Thesequel.
<!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15><!WA15>Etch -- x86 binary instrumentation and optimization

Courses (Winter 96)

<!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16><!WA16>CS&E 451.

Looking for a masters or quals project?
Click <!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17><!WA17>here for a list of projects youmight do for a masters degree, a quals project, or just for fun.
Some recent papers

<!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18><!WA18>A Trace-driven Comparison of Algorithms for Parallel Prefetching and CachingTracy Kimbrel, Andrew Tomkins, R.
