He received his S.B. degree in Computer Science from MIT in1986 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford 1992.
Chambers's research interests lie in the design and implementationof advanced programming systems, incorporating expressive programminglanguages, efficient implementations, and supportive programmingenvironments. He currently is investigating object-oriented languagesand leads the <!WA0><!WA0><!WA0><ahref="http://www.cs.washington.edu/research/projects/cecil/www">Ceciland Vortex projects: Cecil is a purely object-oriented languageserving as a vehicle for investigating multi-methods, static typing, modules, and other features, and Vortex is an optimizing compilersystem for object-oriented languages incorporating intra- andinterprocedural static analyses and profile-guided optimizations, withfront-ends for Cecil, C++, Modula-3, and Java. Previously, Chamberswas a member of the <!WA1><!WA1><!WA1>Self project.
Chambers also is a member of the <!WA2><!WA2><!WA2><ahref="http://www.cs.washington.edu/research/projects/spin/www">SPINProject. SPIN is an extensible operating system microkernel whichsupports dynamic adaptation of system interfaces and implementationsunder direct application control while still maintaining systemintegrity and isolating applications. SPIN utilizes a dialect of theModula-3 language as a pointer-safe kernel extension language. SPINalso relies on <!WA3><!WA3><!WA3><ahref="http://www.cs.washington.edu/research/projects/unisw/DynComp/www">dynamiccompilation to achieve high performance despite its fine-grainedextensibility.
If you're from UW, click <!WA4><!WA4><!WA4><Ahref="http://www.cs.washington.edu/research/projects/cecil/www/Projects/index.html">herefor information on some undergraduate- and graduate-level researchprojects in these areas.

Contact Information
Prof. Craig Chambers
Department of Computer Science and Engineering
University of Washington
Box 352350
Seattle, WA 98195-2350
(206) 685-2094; fax: (206) 543-2969
chambers@cs.washington.edu
[For mail requiring a street address, use Sieg Hall, Room 114]

Last updated: April 10, 1996.
chambers@cs.washington.edu
