Security</h2><p>Perl has a number of strong<a name="INDEX-1266" /><a name="INDEX-1267" />security-related features that can make aprogram written in Perl more secure than the corresponding programwritten in C. Probably the most important of these is<a name="INDEX-1268" />data-flowanalysis, better known as <em class="emphasis">taintchecking</em><a name="INDEX-1269" />. When this is enabled, Perl keepstrack of which pieces of data seem to have come from the user orenvironment (and are therefore untrustworthy). Generally, if any suchpiece of so-called "tainted" data is used to affectanother process, file, or directory, Perl will prohibit the operationand abort the program. It's not perfect, but it's apowerful way to prevent some security-related mistakes.
