Sun's Fun With Version Numbers</font></b><br>

<P>Sun Microsystems last week rolled out the Java Development Kit version 1.2-or was that Java 2? A few weeks back, Sun unveiled Solaris 2-excuse me, that was Solaris 7. Or maybe it was both-at least all the documentation still says 2.7.</P></extract>
<P>This version numbers game comes from Sun's apparent realization that names and numbers actually mean something. Sun's made major changes in the past to the Solaris operating system with a mere decimal change to the version number-remember the jump from the BSD kernel to the Unix SVR4 kernel between Solaris 2.3 and 2.4? They figured that the version numbers were irrelevant-their engineer customers would understand the difference without need for a full number jump.</P>
<P>But now Sun is trying to compete with Windows NT-and suddenly, version numbers are marketing tools. I can picture the decision-making process that went into this: "If jumping one version number makes a media splash, imagine what a sudden leap of 4.4 in the version number will do!"</P>
<P>Of course, by now, all of us who deal with Sun regularly don't care about version numbers. If anything, the jump to the Solaris 7 name left some people confused. While what passes for Sun's marketing rallies around the new number, I've had to refer to it as 2.7 before anybody technical that I've spoken to would understand what I'm talking about.</P>
<P>Now we've got Java 2-big surprise there. Yes, the number of enhancements to the Java platform rate a full number change, </P>
<P>they're a significant boost for Java technology. But considering that all that's happened with Java so far has happened mostly within the hundredths place of the version number-from version 1.1 to version 1.1.7-JDK 1.2 had a certain pure tech logic to it.</P>
<P>This round number stuff is new territory for Sun-this is the company that, as even its most loyal customers have noted, can't market its way out of a wet paper bag. But considering the kind of squeeze that's being put on Solaris at the lower end of the market, a little bit of market-version numbering couldn't hurt. It's not just Windows NT that Sun has to worry about-some recent numbers suggest that the Linux operating system may take more of a bite out of Solaris' market in the near term than it does of Microsoft's.</P>
<P>Sun has come a long way with making Solaris competitive, on both Sparc and Intel-there's the new InstallShield package management and easier administration. But most of the changes seem to be more aimed at retaining, rather than gaining, market share.</P>
<P>If Sun is going to hold off NT, Linux, and other operating system threats, it's going to have to do more than run a numbers game.</P>
