!001 Genetic Options This tutorial covers the options controllinghow the simulator permits the construction ofnew bid strategies. It covers: (1) Mutation. (2) Crossover. (3) Selection. (4) Generations.A basic familiarity with genetic algorithms(available in the documentation),is assumed.!002 Getting the Genetic Parameter Controls From the Genetics menu selecting All willallow the user to edit mutation rate, crossovertype, generations of improvement, and theselection method used by the genetic algorithm. The Reset Params selection off of the Geneticmenu returns all the genetic controls totheir default states.!003 Mutation Whenever a new strategy is produced fromexisting strategies the gene describing ithas a probability, independent for each bitin the gene, that the bit will flip. Themutation slider permits the user to selectthis per-bit rate.!004 Crossover Crossover is the blending of two existinggenes to produce a gene. A radio buttongroup allows the user to select one point, two point, uniform, or no crossover.!005 Selection Selection is the process of choosing whichgenes are chosen to be blended (crossed over)andmutated to replace inferior genes during thecourse of the simulation. Selection isprobabilistic, proportional to some measureof quality. (Continued)!006 The user may use a radio button group to choseselection in proportion to the genes ranking byprofit (Rank), in proportion to the profitdirectly (Roulette), or in proportion to anaffine function of profit (Proportional). Theparameters of the affine function are controlledby the sliders at the bottom of the selectiondialog.!007 Generations There is a slider to control the number ofgeneration the genetic algorithm continues tosearch for new bidding strategies. It is atthe bottom of the genetic controls.!008
