ASEM-51 Version 1.3 for DOS/Windows
===================================
W.W. Heinz, December 31, 2002
1. What exactly is ASEM-51?
---------------------------
ASEM-51 is a two-pass macro assembler for the Intel MCS-51 family of
microcontrollers. It is running on the PC under MS-DOS, Windows, and Linux.
The ASEM-51 assembly language is a rich subset of the Intel standard that
guarantees maximum compatibility with existing 8051 assembler sources.
ASEM-51 can generate two sorts of object files: Intel-HEX format, which is
directly accepted by most EPROM programmers, and absolute OMF-51 format,
which is required for many simulators, emulators and target debuggers.
Thus ASEM-51 is suitable for small and medium MCS-51-based microcontroller
projects in hobby, education and business.
For detailed information refer to the documentation provided.
2. May I really use ASEM-51?
----------------------------
Yes! :-)
If you can't believe that, read the ASCII file LICENSE.DOC provided.
3. What do I need to get ASEM-51 running?
-----------------------------------------
The DOS real-mode assembler ASEM.EXE requires only 256 kB of free DOS memory
and MS-DOS 3.0 (or higher), and will therefore run on every ancient IBM-PC
or XT with a 4.77 MHz 8088. :-)
The new protected-mode assembler ASEMX.EXE requires a 286 CPU (or better),
and at least 512 kB of free XMS memory (1 MB recommended).
The new Win32 console-mode assembler ASEMW.EXE requires a 386 CPU (or better)
and Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 or XP.
ASEM-51 is fast enough even for the slowest DOS and Windows systems possible!
However, the HTML documentation set requires a 90 MHz Pentium (or better)
and a web browser. :-)
If you have a 16 MHz 386 only, you should better read the ASCII manuals!
4. How can I install ASEM-51 on my PC?
--------------------------------------
ASEM-51 for DOS/Windows is distributed as a ZIP archive.
To install it on your system, perform the following steps:
If you are working under Windows, open a DOS-Box.
Create a new, empty scratch directory on your harddisk.
MKDIR SCRATCH
Unpack your ASEM-51 distribution archive into this directory,
preserving the subdirectory structure, e.g.
PKUNZIP -od ASEM5113.ZIP SCRATCH
Make the scratch directory default.
CD SCRATCH
Run the batch file INSTALL.BAT provided,
INSTALL C:\ASEM51
(or something) and follow the instructions.
5. Where can I get more information?
------------------------------------
The assembler and the hex-to-binary converter are described in detail
in file ASEM_51.DOC.
The 8051 bootstrap program BOOT-51 is explained in file BOOT51.DOC.
File LICENSE.DOC contains the ASEM-51 license agreement.
All what's new since version 1.2, is listed in file RELEASE.130.
If you need updates or assistance, or you want to report bugs, see
file SUPPORT.DOC.
To read the HTML documentation, bookmark the index file DOCS.HTM.
For late-breaking news check out the official ASEM-51 homepage at
http://plit.de/asem-51/
6. How can I get rid of that bull-shit again?
---------------------------------------------
If you have installed ASEM-51, but you don't like it, you can easily
uninstall it. Run the batch file KILLASEM.BAT provided,
KILLASEM C:\ASEM51
(or whereever ASEM-51 is installed) and that's it.
