Other names for the games are Shithead (UK) or Asshole (Australia, USA).

The goal of the game is to not be the last one to get rid of all your cards, according to the following - quite simple as also Yankees are playing it ;) - rules:

Dealing/Setup

Every player starts with three cards in his hand, and a set of three face down cards on the table and another set of three cards face up on top of them. The remaining cards are put in the deck.

The face up cards on the table can be exchanged with the cards in the hand (with drag and drop1). Generally people try to put "good" cards (according to the rules below) on the table, but your milage might vary.

To actually start the game, click on a card in your hand. The cards are sorted and the game starts with a random player.

Playing

In counter-clockwise turns the players put down their cards, which must be equal to or higher than the last played one (with aces being the highest cards). Note that you can put down any amount of cards with equal numbers (e.g. the ♠ 5 and the ♣ 5). After playing the player must pick up cards from the deck until he has again three cards in the hand (or the deck is empty).

There are a few special cards and exceptions:

2's

Can be played always; the next player can continue with every card

The last card played is the reverse card (7)2

The next card must be equal or smaller

Skip card (8)2

The next player is skipped

Nuke card (10)2

Can be played always (as 2's), but additionally the played pile is removed and the player can continue (though he may not pick up cards from the deck (except he has no more cards to play).

Four cards with the same number on the played pile

If the last four played cards are equal the whole played pile is removed and the same player can continue (having an effect similar to playing a nuke card (10), except that you can pick up cards). Note that also the effect of "special cards" are removed (e.g. the next player is not skipped, if there have been played four 8's).

If a player can't continue according to those rules, he must pick up all of the played cards. Of course the played pile can always be picked up willingly; making the next player continue.

Playing from the table

When a player has no more cards left in his hand (and there are no cards left on the deck), he can continue with the cards on the table. They are played according to the same rules as from the hand; starting first with the face up ones and then - if they are also sucessfully removed - with the face down ones.

Note that if you have to pick up the played pile while playing from the face up cards you can't move any of them from the table into those in your hand and that you have to play first the (new) cards in your hand before you can (again) play the card from the table.

The face down cards have to be played randomly. If the selected card can't be played according to the rules, it and all the cards from the played pile must be picked up.

The status line gives some information about what's going on!

Note to the layout

After starting a game you have (from left to right and from top to bottom):

The deck: A heap of cards (with face down), from where you take up new cards (if you put the mouse over it you are informed about the remaining cards).

The cards of the human player; above the cards in the hand, below the cards on the table.

In the next line it's the same with players 1 and 3. In between them there's the played pile (which also shows the number of the cards it contains, if the mouse rests over it).

In the last line there's player 2

1) Drag and drop means clicking with the a mouse button on the card, holding the button and then dragging the card to its destination. The end of this activity is signaled by releasing the button.

2) This card can be changed in the settings dialog.

            Markus Schwab (g17m0@lycos.com)

Previous
(Machiavelli)

Cardgames

Next
(Sgt.
