Mayor

Sgt. Mayor is an english cardgame - or at least I learned it from two english people (or actually from Verónica (who is not exactly english, but learned it herself from those two english. But who cares ...)). It is also known as 3-5-8 (though the version here is rather its 6-5-8 variant).

This is a trick-taking card game, in which each player has to win at least a certain number of tricks. The player winning at first 101 tricks more than needed (cummulated) wins the game.</>
Dealing

The game is played by 3 persons with a standard 52-cards deck having the 2 of spades (♠-2) removed. Each player gets 17 cards.

The first game is started by a randomly selected player (needing 6 tricks). The next ones are started by the others in turn.

Playing

The players have to get 6, 3 and 8 tricks respectively. The player needing 8 tricks starts by selecting the colour of the trumps (by clicking a card with that suit). Then the actual game starts according to the following rules:

Each turn can be started by any colour. The other players continue counter-clockwise following suit, or playing any card (be it a trump or not) if unable to do so.

Each trick is won by the highest trump, or by the highest card of the suit led if no trump card was played to the trick. The winner of each trick leads to the next.

The difference between the made and the proposed tricks is added to the score. The player reaching first 101 wins the game.

The next game starts the player which before needed 6 tricks. Now he must get 8 tricks.

Exchange

Before starting the next game (actually naming the next trump), there's an exchange of cards.

Each player who made more than needed tricks, can give one unwanted card per overtrick to a player who didn't fullfill his needed tricks and gets in return those player highest card of the same suit (or any card, if they don't any of those).

If two players won overticks, the player with the higher amount of needed cards for the hand about to be played trades first.

The status line gives some information about what's going on!

Note to the layout

After starting a game you have (from left to right and from top to bottom):

A card (an ace) indicating the special colour.

The cards of the human player. The won cards (above) become visible, if they are clicked into; right-clicking allows to sort them.

The played pile.

In the last line there are players 1 and 2

1) This number can be changed in the settings dialog.

            Markus Schwab (g17m0@lycos.com)

Previous
(Røvhult)

Cardgames

Next
(Twopart)
