It is similar to Canasta; though it tends to end faster, thanks to the "Buracos" (a set of extra cards, which one picks up, if one of the team does not have any cards left).

It's object is (with the help of ones partner) to create melds of cards of the same rank (or series of cards of the same suit) called "cerrados" and then go out by playing or discarding all the cards in your hand and thus get as many points as possible.

Buraco is played by 4 sets of 52 cards and 12 jokers.

Dealing

Every player is dealt 111 cards into his hand. There are also two more piles with the same number of cards (called "buracos"), one for each team.

The remaining cards are put into the deck (face down).

The initial player is chosen at random, and the deal then rotates clockwise after every hand.

The player starting the game is also shown the first card of the deck (face up) in the pile of unused cards.

Playing

Drawing cards

A turn begins either by drawing the first card from the stock into the player's hand or by picking up the entire discard pile. However, for the latter one needs to have a pair of cards "matching" the top card of the discard pile — this three cards he has to meld immediately.

Matching means that either the numbers must be equal (independend of the colour) or the colour and the numbers of the cards in question are in a sequence (Ace (as one), three, four, ..., ten, jack, queen, king, ace - as the two is a joker, it does not belong to the serie).

As an exception the player starting the game can pick up the card on the discard pile in the first round, even if he has no matching pair.

Melding

Afterwards he can play his cards, either by starting a new pile of "matching" cards (see above) or by adding cards to existing piles - if he wants: A possible way of playing is to keep his cards in the hand to maybe pick up the pile of the dumped cards.

Every pile must have at least 3 cards, one of which can either be a joker or a two (of any colour). These cards can substitute any other card.

Putting down happens with drag and drop2.

Further rules are:

Every pile put down kann only contain a single joker or 2 - except if it is a pile of only jokers and/or 2's.

If one pile contains seven cards, it will be closed (and removed from the table). Those containimg either a joker or a 2 are called dirty and those without clean. To go out, the team needs at least one of those "cerrados".

If a player has no more cards except jokers and/or 2's, he picks up the "buraco" - a previously reserved pile (one for every team). Afterwards he continues normally (e.g. it is still his turn, if he did not dump a card before).

If there is neither a "buraco" nor has the team a "cerrado" a player can not dump his last card.

Joker or 2's inside a pile can be moved (inside the pile), but not picked up again. That means: If there is for example a serie of ♥ 5, 6 and joker, one can move the joker down (to the position of the ♥4) and therefore add a ♥33; but one can not put down a ♥7 and take the joker in ones hand (though one can put down the 7 and the joker becomes the 8 or the 4).

A joker or 2 on top of the discard pile can never be picked up; even if the player has two equal cards.

End of a turn

If the player can't or want play anymore cards, he must discard one (by clicking on it) and the next player (counter-clockwise) continues.

To go out (End of a hand)

The game ends, if a team has at least one "cerrado", has picked up its "buraco" and then one of the team's player gets rid of his last card (either by playing it to the discard pile or to one of the piles on the table.

Scoring

At the end of the game the points are counted. Every "cerrado" without joker or 2 counts 400 points (otherwise 200); except one with aces - those have 500 or 300 points respectively. A "cerrado" with only joker and 2 counts 1.000 points, one with only 2's 2.000. But attention: If one starts such a pile without finishing it, it counts as -1.000 points!

One gets further 100 points for taking up the buraco and for ending the game; 100 points are substracted, if the buraco was not taken.

Finally one adds the points of the cards itself: Those on the table are added and those in the hand are substracted. A joker counts 50 points, a 2 25, the ace counts as 20, king to 8 (inclusively) have 10 and the others below only 5 points.

The game ends, if one of the teams has 2.0001 points or more.

The status line gives some information about what's going on!

Note to the layout

After starting a game you have (from left to right and from top to bottom):

The deck: A heap of cards (face down), from where you draw new cards (if you put the mouse over it you are informed about the remaining cards).

The pile with the discarded cards (with face up). Those pile also shows the number of its cards, if the mouse is put over.

The cards of the player. Presorted by numbers, but re-sortable with drag and drop2 or the entries in the Buraco menu.

The piles on the table of team 1. Cards can be added to that piles with drag und drop2 (if it is the turn of the player).

The piles on the table of team 2.

In the last row are the cards of the other players.

1) This can be changed in the settings dialog.

2) Drag and drop means clicking with the a mouse button on the card, holding the button and then dragging the card to its destination. The end of this activity is signaled by releasing the button.

3) You don't have to move the joker manually.
