The Genuine Enigma Machine

I took a few liberties with the appearance and the setup but the interior
mechanism and functioning are genuine. And there was no spacebar - it's not
that I forgot that.

The View Text and the Autotype buttons are an invention of mine; the original
machine had just the Lamp Panel, and the encoded / decoded text was typed in and
copied manually from / on a piece of paper...

According to theory the encryption is quite good:
If you compare the letter frequencies of the original and the encrypted text
then you will notice that each encrypted letter occurs with an almost equal
frequency, ironing out the language specific original letter frequency. Also
history shows that the code could only be broken with considerable effort.

This machine has many more wheels to choose from than the original and the
reflector is wired randomly (as opposed to the original where the reflector
was an integral part of the machine). So I assume that the encryptions produced
by this machine are even harder to break. The main drawback however is the limited
character repertoire and the fact that a letter cannot be encrypted as itself. As
a matter of interest: this latter fact made it possible for the Polish scientists
(in particular mathematician Marian Rajewski) and then the English cryptograpers 
around Allan Turing at Bletchley Park to break the code.
