The file \fIEenv.csh\fP in$ESPS_BASE/lib contains \fIcsh\fP commands to set all these variablesto their default values. Many users find it convenient to copy thisfile to their $HOME directory and insert a "source Eenv" command intotheir .login file. An equivalent \fIsh\fP version is contained in$ESPS_BASE/lib/Eenv.sh. ($ESPS_BASE represents the base of theinstalled ESPS directory tree, and can be determined by running\fIget_esps_base\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1)). .PPA description of the meanings and possible values of the environmentvariables follows. Note that the various path environment variablescan themselves have embedded environment variables (preceeded by thesymbol $). These environment variables are expanded by\fIfind_esps_file\fP (3\-\s-1ESPS\s+1). If "$ESPS_BASE" is embeddedwithin such an environment variable definition but the environmentvariable ESPS_BASE itself is not defined, then \fIfind_esps_file\fPexpands it to a compiled-in default (/usr/esps). .IP ESPS_VERBOSEThis variable controls the amount of feedback the user is provided about theorigin of parameters used by the programs. It has 3 significantsettings: 0, 1, and 2. If it is equal to 0, no feedback is provided. If it is equal to 1, programs report the value of any parameters takenfrom ESPS common. If it is 2 or greater, programs report the valuesof parameters taken from ESPS common, the name of the actual parameterfile used (if any), and the values of parameters taken from theparameter file. If ESPS_VERBOSE is not set, a value of 2 is assumed.Note that parameter file selection is affected by ESPS_PARAMS_PATH..IP USE_ESPS_COMMONThis controls whether ESPS common is processed by programs. If set to"off", common is not read by ESPS programs; otherwise, common is readwhen appropriate. If this variable is undefined, a value of "YES" isassumed. For a complete description of ESPS parameter and Common fileprocessing, see \fIread_params\fP (3\-\s-1ESPS\s+1). For historicalreasons, Common processing is enabled by default (i.e., unlessUSE_ESPS_COMMON is defined and set to "off"). However, many usersfind it advisable to disable Common. This makes ESPS usage somewhat less error-prone. Also, many programs will run faster if Common is disabled. .IP ESPSCOMThis specifies the name of the file used for ESPS Common. If a fullpath is not given, the path is interpreted relative to the directoryfrom which any given ESPS program is called. If ESPSCOM is notdefined, the default is ".espscom" in the user's home directory. Fora complete description of parameter and common processing, see\fIgetparam\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1)..IP FIELD_ORDERThis controls whether the data records are written in data type order orfield order (see write_header(3\-ESPS) for more details). If it isset to "off" or is undefined, the data records are written in datatype order; otherwise, the data records are written in field order..IP ESPS_EDRThis variable determines the data representation format of ESPS fileswritten by ESPS programs. If this variable is not defined or has avalue other than \fIon\fR the default action is taken. The default isto write ESPS files in the host machine's native data representation(this includes such things as byte order and floating point formats).ESPS files have a field in the header that indicates whether the file isin the machine's native format (NATIVE) or in Entropic's external datarepresentation (EDR). All ESPS implementations on all supportedmachines can read files made on any other implementation if they are inEDR format. In addition all implementations can read files in theirhost machine's native format. Some implementations can also read filesin other machine's native format, but this will not generally be thecase. If files must be portable then they should be written in EDRformat. But if not, then NATIVE mode should be used, since dataconversions will not be required and programs will run faster..spIn summary, this variable should be set \fIon\fR to write files than canbe read on any valid ESPS implementation. It should be undefined or setto \fIoff\fR for maximum efficiency on the local machine..IP ARIEL_16On Sun systems that have the AT&T ("Surfboard") DSP32C installed with an Ariel ProPort option for analog I/O, setting this environmentvariable indicates to the software that a 16 Mhz crystal is installed(rather than the standard 24 MHz. crystal). .IP ARIELS32C_BIN_PATHFor systems with an Ariel S-32C card, this is the location of the directory containing DSP binaries. Use of this variable is notnecessary if programs are installed in standard places. .IP CODEC16On Sun systems that have the AT&T ("Fab 2") DSP32 board installed andour driver software, setting this variable to any value results in theon-board codec chip running at 16,000 samples/second. By default, thecodec chip runs at 12,000 samples/second..IP DSPSPECFor systems with an Ariel S-32C card or Ariel ProPort (analog I/O),this environment variable should be defined. Normally, it should havethe value "DEVICE=/dev/s32c0,PATH=$ESPS_BASE/s32cbin"..IP DSP32_BIN_PATHFor systems with an AT&T FAB2 board, this is the location of the directory containing DSP binaries. Use of this variable is notnecessary if programs are installed in standard places. .IP DSP32C_BIN_PATHFor systems with a Heurikon or AT&T SURF board, this is the locationof the directory containing DSP binaries. Use of this variable is notnecessary if programs are installed in standard places..IP DEF_HEADERIf this variable is defined, it is assumed to be the path to a filecontaining an ESPS header, which will then be used as a default headerby \fIread_header\fP (3\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) when reading any non-ESPS ornon-SIGnal file. In effect, when any ESPS program (including\fP(x)waves\fP+) tries to read a non-ESPS file, the file is treated asan ESPS file with the header DEF_HEADER. Note that, if DEF_HEADER isdefined, programs will no longer report "non-ESPS file" and exit, since they will stick the header in front of any non-ESPS input file. The exception for AT&T format SIGnal files (DEF_HEADER is not used forthem) is made so that \fI(x)waves+\fP continues to read them as SIGnalfiles..IP ELM_HOSTThis variable must be set to the name of the host running the Entropiclicense manager daemon. .IP ELMTIMEOUTThis variable specifies the time in seconds that the Entropic softwarewill wait for a response from the license daemon, before determiningthat it is down. If the variable is undefined the default timeoutperiod is 10 seconds. You may need to adjust this depending on yournetwork environment (a very large and busy network might require alonger timeout period)..IP ELMRETRIESThis variable specifies the number of times that an ESPS programtries to contact the license manager before giving up. The defaultis 2. Increase for a heavilyloaded network, if problems occur..IP ESPS_TEMP_PATHThis can be set to the directory that you want programs to use fortemporary files. Not all programs currenlty pay attention toESPS_TEMP_PATH, but over time they will be modified to do so..IP ESPS_MENU_PATHThis is the path used by \fImbuttons\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) and \fIfbuttons\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) to find \fIolwm\fP-format menu files. If ESPS_MENU_PATH is not defined, the default path used is ".:$ESPS_BASE/lib/menus". .IP ESPS_PARAMS_PATH This is the path used by find ESPS parameter files specified by thestandard ESPS \fB-P\fP option. If ESPS_PARAMS_PATH is not defined, the default path used is ".:$ESPS_BASE/lib/params". .IP ESPS_FILTERS_PATH This is the path used by certain programs and scripts to locate standard ESPS filter files. If ESPS_FILTERS_PATH is not defined, the default path used is ".:$ESPS_BASE/lib/filters".IP ESPS_LIB_PATHThis is the path used by certain programs and scripts to find standard ESPS library files. If ESPS_LIB_PATH is not defined, the dfault path is "$ESPS_BASE/lib".IP ESPS_INPUT_PATH This is the path used by certain programs and scripts to find certain standard ESPS input files. If ESPS_INPUT_PATH is not defined, the default path used is ".:$ESPS_BASE/lib/files". .IP LSISC30_BIN_PATHFor systems with an LSI-SC30 board, this is the location of the directory containing DSP binaries. Use of this variable is notnecessary if programs are installed in standard places. .IP WAVES_INPUT_PATH This is the path used by \fIwaves\fP+ and \fIxwaves\fP+ to find allinput signal files, label files, and labelmenu files. IfWAVES_INPUT_PATH is not defined, the default path used is".:$ESPS_BASE/lib/waves/files". .IP WAVES_LIB_PATH This is the path used by \fIwaves\fP+ and \fIxwaves\fP+ to find certain library files. If WAVES_LIB_PATH is not defined, the defaultpath used is "$ESPS_BASE/lib/waves". .IP WAVES_MENU_PATH This is the path used by \fIxwaves\fP+ to find \fIolwm\fP-format menufiles used with the \fIxwaves\fP+ command \fImake_panel\fP. IfWAVES_MENU_PATH is not defined, the default path used is".:$ESPS_BASE/lib/waves/menus". .IP WAVES_COMMAND_PATH This is the path used by \fIwaves\fP+ and \fIxwaves\fP+ to find command files. If WAVES_COMMAND_PATH is not defined, the default path used is ".:$ESPS_BASE/lib/waves/commands". .IP WAVES_COLORMAP_PATH This is the path used by \fIwaves\fP+ and \fIxwaves\fP+ to find colormaps. If WAVES_COLORMAP_PATH is not defined, the default pathused is ".:$ESPS_BASE/lib/waves/colormaps"..IP WAVES_PROFILE_PATH This is the path used by \fIwaves\fP+ and \fIxwaves\fP+ to find the startup profile. IF WAVES_PROFILE_PATH is not defined, the default path used is "$HOME:$ESPS_BASE/lib/waves". .IP BBOX_QUIT_BUTTON If this variable is defined, it forces a "QUIT"button to be included at the top of every button panel created viaexv_bbox (3-ESPS). This includes button panels created by\fImbuttons\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1), \fIfbuttons\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1),and the \fIxwaves\fP+ command \fImake_panel\fP. The variable has noeffect if a quit button was specified directly using the \fB-q\fPoption to \fImbuttons\fP or the \fIquit_button\fP keyword of the\fIxwaves\fP+ command \fImake_panel\fP..SH OPTIONS.PPThere are none..SH ESPS PARAMETERS.PPThe parameter file is not read. .SH ESPS COMMON.PPThe common file is not used..SH BUGSNone known..SH EXPECTED CHANGES.PPMore variables will be added..PP.SH "SEE ALSO".PP\fIgetparam\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1),\fIread_header\fP (3\-\s-1ESPS\s+1),.br\fIwrite_header\fP(3\-\s-1ESPS\s+1), \fIe_temp_name\fP(3\-\s-1ESPS\s+1),.br\fIfind_esps_file\fP (3\-\s-1ESPS\s+1),\fIfind_esps_file\fP(1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1),.br\fIget_esps_base\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1).SH AUTHOR.PPDavid Burton, John Shore
