It can also be used with \fIplotsd\fR and \fIplay\fR as an interactiveplot/play program..PPAfter \fIplotsd\fR is used to display a sampled data plot on thegraphics terminal screen, \fIrange\fR is run. It displays instructionsat the top of the display. To use \fIrange\fR simply to put a range into the ESPS Commonfile, \fIrange\fR is used without any options.First, click the left mousebutton while pointing to any vertical position above the origin ofthe graph (extreme left side). Next, do the same thing at the endpoint (extreme right side). This completes the set-up portion of theprocess. The program is now in what we will call \fIselect mode\fR.At this point, the left mouse button will select the starting point ofthe range, the middle button will call the \fIplay\fR program on theentire displayed plot, and the right buttton will zoom out the plot(replot the entire sampled data file). After the starting point of the range is selected (with the left button)the current rangewill be displayed at the top of the screen as the mouse is movedacross the graph. The program is now in \fIrange mode\fR.In this mode pressing the left button will zoom in on the selectedrange (replot the sampled data file using the selected range). Themiddle button will save the selected range into the Common file andexit. The right button will abort the current range and allow you toreselect the starting point again (that is it returns to \fIselect mode\fR). .PPIf the \fB\-p\fR option is used, then \fIrange\fR will call the\fIplay\fR program, instead of saving the selected range and exitingwhen the middle button is pressed in \fIrange mode\fR. This causes theselected range to by played (assuming of course, that your system hasplayback capability and the ESPS \fIplay\fR program has been correctlyconfigured). When \fIplay\fR returns, if the mouse has not been moved, pressing the middle button again will save the range into Commonand exit. If the mouse has moved, then the program simply remains in\fIrange mode\fR..PPThe \fB\-b\fR and \fB\-c\fR options are passed on to \fIplay\fR when itis run. See \fIplay\fR(1\-ESPS) for details..PPThe ESPS Common file is updated each whenever the plot is redrawn (zoomin or out), or when a segment is played. This could be useful whenrunning \fIplotsd/range\fR in one window and another ESPS program thatuses Common in another window. The top line of the display always tells what the mouse buttons will doin each mode. You can use your Unix interrupt character to abort out of range atanytime..PPNote that since this program depends on ESPS Common and processes itoften during its execution, the messages from Common processing if theESPS_VERBOSE environment variable is non-zero will interfere with theplotting..SH "ESPS PARAMETERS"No ESPS parameter file is read..SH ESPS COMMONThe following items are read from the ESPS Common file:.IP.I "beginplot - integer".IPThis is the x-coordinate position at the origin of the graph..sp.I "endplot - integer".IPThis is the x-coordinate position at the end point of the graph..PPThe following items are written into the ESPS Common file:.IP.I "start - integer".IPThe left point in the range selected..sp.I "nan - integer".IPThe number of points in the selected range..PPThe ESPS Common file is updated everytime \fIplay\fR or \fIplotsd\fR iscalled by \fIrange\fR..PPESPS Common processing may be disabled by setting the environment variableUSE_ESPS_COMMON to "off" (though it would be pointless to do so when usingthis program). The default ESPS Common file is .espscom in the user's home directory. This may be overidden by settingthe environment variable ESPSCOM to the desired path. User feedback ofCommon processing is determined by the environment variable ESPS_VERBOSE,with 0 causing no feedback and increasing levels causing increasinglydetailed feedback. If ESPS_VERBOSE is not defined, a default value of 3 isassumed..SH "ESPS HEADERS"No ESPS header is read..SH DIAGNOSTICS.PP.SH "BUGS".PP.SH "SEE ALSO".PPmlplot(1\-ESPS), plotsd(1\-ESPS), plotspec(1\-ESPS), play(1\-ESPS).SH "FUTURE CHANGES"Mark selected range with vertical bars..SH "AUTHOR".PPAjaipal S.
