.lo.ce 2.bInstallation Instructions for Waves+ Version 2.spDocument Version: 1.3 6/6/90.sh 1 "Tape Contents".ppThe enclosed tape (or diskettes) contains the \fIwaves+\fR binarydirectory (or directories)..ppThe \fIwaves+\fR package consists of a binary subset of the EntropicSignal Processing System (ESPS) and the \fIwaves+\fR programs, including\fIwaves+\fR, \fIspectrum\fR, and \fIlabel\fR(or \fIxwaves+\fR, \fIxspectrum\fR, and \fIxlabel\fR for X Windowsystems). The directory on the tape contains a standard ESPS directorystructure with the \fIwaves+\fR programs and ESPS programs inplace. .ppThe name of the \fIwaves+\fR binary directory depends on the target machinetype. If you ordered \fIwaves+\fR for more than onemachine type, then all of those directories will be on the tape. Thefollowing table shows the directory names of the various \fIwaves+\fRproducts as they might appear on the tape..TSbox, center, tab(;);c c c cl l l l.Machine;Directory on Tape;Size (MB)Mac II;waves.mac;12Sun 3 (OS 4.X);waves.sun3;12Sun 3 (OS 3.X);waves.sun3_OS3;12Sun 4 (Any Sparc);waves.sun4;14Sun 386i;waves.sun386;20Masscomp;waves.mc;12DEC DS3100;waves.ds3100;18HP300;waves.hp300;12HP800;waves.hp800;14_.TE.ppIf you also ordered the DSP32 support kit, then that product will be onthis tape also. That directory will be either\fIdsp32.sun3_OS3\fR, \fIdsp32.sun3_OS4\fR, \fIdsp32.sun3x\fR, or \fIdsp32.sun4\fR. .ppThis package also includes (along with these instructions) manualpages for all included programs and installation instructions for theDSP32 Support Kit, if you also ordered it..sh 1 "Installation".ppTo install theproduct, simply read the tar tape into your system. In order tooperate correctly, waves+ must be rooted at \fI/usr/esps\fR, except forSun 386i. This can bedone by either reading the tape directly into \fI/usr\fR, and changingthe name of the appropriate waves+ directory to \fIesps\fR, or by readingthe tape in somewhere else and putting a symbolic link from\fI/usr/esps\fR to the correct directory from the tape. .ppFor Sun 386i, ESPS and/or \fIwaves+\fR must be rooted at\fI/files/esps\fR..sh 2 "Our Suggested Method".ppRead the tape into a reasonable location, say \fI/home/esps\fR. Then inthere you will have the binary directories, and perhaps the DSP driver. For example: (replace XXX with your tape name, e.g. rst8).nf.ft CWcd /homemkdir espscd espstar xvpf /dev/XXX ln -s /home/esps/waves.sun4 /usr/esps.ft R.fi.ppYou might have to go super-user in order to put the linkonto \fI/usr\fR. Note the \fB-p\fR option on \fItar\fR. This is neededto preserve the modes of some directories. However, on some systems we have seen this cause problems (files couldnot be created). If this happens to you, redo the \fItar\fR without the\fB-p\fR option, and after the tape has been read, do:.nf.ft CWchmod 0777 esps.*/man/cat*.ft R.fi.ppThis will set the mode of the manual page directories correctly..sh 1 "Search Paths".ppIn the following discussion, it is assumed that ESPS/\fIwaves+\fR isrooted at \fI/usr/esps\fR, which is always the case, except for Sun 386imachines. If you have a Sun 386i, then translate all \fI/usr/esps\fRto \fI/files/esps\fR as you read this..ppIn order to execute ESPS/\fIwaves+\fR programs users must place the ESPS/\fIwaves+\fR binarydirectory on their default search path. If ESPS/\fIwaves+\fR is installed asdescribed above, that path would be \fI/usr/esps/bin\fR. Make sure that all potential users have this on their path..ppYour search path is usually determined by a statement in your\fI.cshrc\fRor \fI.profile\fR. But your case might be different, depending on the shell that you use. In any event, you must ensurethat all ESPS and \fIwaves+\fR users have the ESPS \fIbin\fR directoryon their path..ppYou can determine that the ESPS/\fIwaves+\fR installation is correct up to thispoint, by running \fIeman\fR to view an ESPS manual page. After you have changed your path try:.nf.ft CW% eman testsd.ft R.fi.ppThis should display the manual page for the testsd program. If this works, then all your paths are set up correctly and you are ready to get akey. If \fIeman\fR was not found, then check your path.If \fIeman\fR was found, but it failed to find the\fItestsd\fR manual page, then check that the link to \fI/usr/esps\fR iscorrect..sh 1 "Getting Your Key".ppIn order to get a license key you must run \fIelmadmin -c\fR to generate aserver code and to store your key. Run \fIelmadmin\fR on the host thatyou will be running the license manager daemon on. The key will onlywork if the daemon is run on the same host that the key was generatedfor. Two pieces of information are required for us to assign you yourkey (or keys): (1) your server code from \fIelmadmin -c\fR and (2) thesales order number (from a sticker on the media)..ppYou can get your keys either by voice telehone or by FAX. Keep thefact that we are located in the Eastern US time zone in mind when tryingto call. For customers outside of North America it might be best toFAX your request for your key (keys) to us at 202 546-6648. We'll FAXthe keys right back along with instructions for installing the key. To avoid errors in the server code, it would bebest to send the actual output of the \fIelmadmin -c\fR command ifpossible (see the Unix \fIscript\fR command)..ppIf you want to get your keys via voice telephoneit would be best if you can call us while you are at a terminal. Thatway we can give you the keys, wait while you enter them and be sure thateverything is working correctly. If that is not possible then you willhave to carefully write down the server code that \fIelmadmin -c\fRproduces. .ppIf you can call when sitting at a terminal, then do so when you are ready. CallEntropic at 202 547-1420, and tell the person that answers that you arecalling for a "license key". If possible, you will be given tosomeone who can help you. If that person is not available, then yournumber will be taken and we will call you back..ppIf you cannot call from a terminal, run the following command, writedown the server code and then kill the command when it asks for the key. When you copy the server code, watch out for the letter l vs the digit1, etc. Run the following command:.nf.ft CW% elmadmin -cYour server code is: XXX <- record this codePlease enter your key: <control>C <- kill the program now.ft R.fi.ppCall Entropic at the above number and request a license key. We will need that server code and your sales order number to give you a key..ppAfter you get your keysyou will use \fIelmadmin\fR to store them. The command is:.nf.ft CW% elmadmin -cYour server code is: XXX <- this should be the same as earlierPlease enter your key: XXX <- enter the first key given to you\fI<some information will be printed about the key>.fi.ft R.sh 1 "Starting the License Manager".ppBefore you can run \fIwaves+\fR or any of the ESPS programs, you must start the license manager daemon and allow it time toinitialize. To start the daemon, simply type the command:.nf.ft CW% elmd.ft R.fi.ppThis will spawn a background process and exit. If you prefer, you canput this command into your\fI/etc/rc.local\fR, so that it will be executed each time your machine boots. (If you do this, you will have to give thefull path as \fI/usr/esps/bin/elmd\fR). .ppAfter you start the license manager daemon, you have to wait about fourminutes before it will respond to a request for a license. .ppThe license manager daemon makes entries in the file\fI/usr/esps/lib/elm.log\fR. If you have trouble getting our programsto work correctly, we may ask you to look in this file and tell us whatis in there. This file will grow by a line each time a license ischecked in and out. If you want, you can zero the file with thecommand:.nf.ft CW% elmadmin -z.ft R.fi.ppNote that truncating the log file by other means would be ineffectual, since\fIelmd\fR keeps the log file open at all times. The next \fIelmd\fRlog file write would simply use the old file pointer, filling the file to theoriginal length. The \fB-z\fR option must be used to truncate thefile..ppA suggested method to clean up the log file every evening is to run thefollowing by your \fIcrontab\fR system. You will need your systemadministrator to set this up..nf.ft CWcp elm.log elm.log.oldelmadmin -z.ft R.fi.sh 1 "Checking Out a License".pp\fIWaves+\fR checks out a license each time it is started. You do nothave to do anything else. In order to run any of the ESPS programsincluded with this package, one of two conditions must be met. Eitherthere is a \fIwaves+\fR running on this host, or \fIwcheckout\fR isrunning on this host. So, for example, if you are running \fIwaves+\fRon your workstation, you can run any of the other ESPS programs includedin this package on the same host as long as \fIwaves+\fR is alsorunning. If you need to run any of these programs and you cannot run\fIwaves+\fR (because you are not on a graphics terminal, for example)you need to run \fIwcheckout\fR to checkout a license for this host.See the manual pages for \fIwcheckout\fR and \fIwfree\fR for details. For details see the document \fILiving with the ESPS Floating License ManagerSystem\fR..ppIf you are running ESPS or \fIwaves+\fR on a different CPU than thelicense manager daemon is running on, you have to set the environmentvariable \fBELM_HOST\fR to identify the name of the host on which the license manager daemon is running. For example, if the license manager daemon is running on a CPUwith hostname \fIfido\fR, you would do:.nf.ft CW% setenv ELM_HOST fido.ft R.fi.ppThis environment variable tells ESPS programs where the daemon isrunning. If you are running the ESPS program or \fIwaves+\fR on thesame host as the daemon, then it is not necessary to set\fBELM_HOST\fR. To checkout a license you do:.nf.ft CW% echeckout.ft R.fi.pp\fIEcheckout\fR will checkout a license, if possible, and then wait inthe background. It will tell you if it has succeeded and return aprocess ID number. To free the license use the command \fIefree\fR.\fIEfree\fR can only be used by the same user that ran \fIecheckout\fRto get the license. Otherwise, the super-user can find the\fIecheckout\fR with \fIps\fR and kill it..ppYou can check on the status of your licenses by using the command:.ft CW.nf% elmadmin -l.ft R.fi.sh 1 "Getting Ready to use Waves+".ppEveryone that is going to use \fIwaves+\fRshould copy the following three files from \fI/usr/esps/lib/waves\fR: \fI.wave_pro\fR, \fInb_params\fR, and \fIwb_params\fR to their home directory. These are parameter files for \fIwaves+\fR. See the \fIwaves+\fRmanual page for details..ppUsers should also edit their path assignment in their \fI.cshrc\fR (orwhatever they use) to include \fI/usr/esps/bin\fR on their search path..ppCopy the files in \fI/usr/esps/demo\fR to your working directory beforelooking at them with \fIwaves+\fR. This version of \fIwaves+\fR will try to writesome temporary files to the directory that the input file comes from(\fI/usr/esps/demo\fR in this case) and you might not have writepermission on this directory. We consider this a bug, and this will bechanged in the next version..ppAlso note that all of the manual pages are stored online and can beaccessed by the command \fIeman\fR..ppAfter you are satisfied that all is well, up to this point, you shouldinstall the device driver, if you ordered it. Proceed to the instructions for installing the device driver. You can delay this, however, if you want to, since \fIwaves+\fR will operate without theboard. .sh 1 "Checking it Out".ppThe directory \fI/usr/esps/demo\fR contains some sample ESPS data filesof each type. You can use these to learn how \fIwaves+\fR handlesdifferent file types..ppWe also suggest that you use \fIeman -k\fR (followed by a keyword tosearch for) to familiarize yourself with the system. See the \fIeman\fRmanual page for details. .sh 1 "Using the X Window Version of Waves+".ppFor Sun systems, there are two copies of \fIwaves+\fR, \fIlabel\fR, and\fIspectrum\fR. The versions by these names are for the Suntools windowsystem. For the X window system, use \fIxwaves+\fR, \fIxlabel\fR, and\fIxspectrum\fR. Non Sun systems only have the X versions..ppThis version of xwaves+ is built under the xview toolkit (from Sun). XView clients must be run under an ICCCM compliant window manager for everything to work correctly. In addition, the OpenLook fonts arerequired..ppThe directory \fI/usr/esps/xview\fR contains a binary copy of theOpenLook window manager, the OpenLook fonts, and a simple script to addthe fonts to your font path. If you are running on a Sun system andalready have the OpenLook (or OpenWindows) package from Sun installed, then you should be OK. Otherwise, see the README file in\fI/usr/esps/xview\fR and follow the instructions there..sh 1 "In Case of Difficulty".ppIf you have questions about the installation process, or havedifficultly running the script please call Entropic for help..sp.TSbox,center,tab(;);l | l.Entropic Research Laboratory, Inc.;Voice: 202 547-1420600 Pa.
