.lo.ce 2.bInstallation Instructions for the ESPS Binary Release.he 'ESPS Binary Installation Instructions''page %'.spDocument version: 1.10 9/19/91.sh 1 "Introduction".ppThis document describes how to install the Entropic Signal ProcessingSystem (ESPS) binary distribution. If you ordered the \fIwaves+\fRproduct at the same time as this product, then it will already beinstalled into this distribution..sh 1 "Floating License System".ppESPS uses floating license technology, which allows you to install theactual files at any location on your network you choose. A licensemanager daemon must be run on a particular host on your network, butESPS and \fIwaves+\fR can be run on any machine (of the correctarchitecture type) on your network, as long as it can connect to thehost with the daemon..ppAfter you have installed the tape contents as described below, you willrun a program on the host where the license daemon will be run; theprogram will return a unique server code. Call Entropic with thiscode and your sales order number (our number assigned to your order)to request your license key. For customers outside of North America,it might be better to request the key via FAX. Details for gettingyour key are given below..sh 1 "Tape Contents".ppThe enclosed tape is a Unix \fItar\fR tape with one or more tar filescontaining an entire ESPS binary directory tree. Use the installationsoftware (see below) to extract the files from the tape. The following table shows the size of the various products:.TSbox, center, tab(;);c c c cl l l d.Machine;Size (MB)_Mac II;26Sun 3 (OS 4.X);40Sun 3 (OS 3.X);40Sun 4 (Any Sparc);65Sun 386i;30Masscomp (RTU 5.X);42Masscomp (RTU 4.X);31Convex;48DEC DS3100;60HP300;46HP800;57Apollo (68K);47Stardent (1500/3000);68IBM RS6000;68.TE.ppIf you also ordered the DSP32 support kit, then the tape willcontain one or more directories called\fIdsp32.sun3_OS3\fR, \fIdsp32.sun3_OS4\fR, \fIdsp32.sun3x\fR, or \fIdsp32.sun4\fR .sh 1 "Installation".sh 2 "Installation Requirements".npA Sun/Sparc workstation.npSunOS 4.0.3 or greater.np75 megabytes of diskspace (on one filesystem).sh 2 "Installation Steps".sh 3 "Extract the Installation Software from the tape.".ipFirst you should change directory to /tmp (or justabout anywhere) and tar in the installation programs. They willreside in a directory called install_erl. .ipYou will need write permission in this directory, and the directorywhich you choose to install ESPS/waves+ into. You may have to be the rootuser (see section below..sp 2.nf % cd /tmp % tar xvf /dev/rst8 install_erl/ install_erl/RUNME install_erl/chkdefs install_erl/chkhost install_erl/erl_admin install_erl/sf install_erl/install_erl install_erl/erldefs install_erl/rextract install_erl/tc_inst_keys install_erl/tc_install.nf.sh 3 "Run the Installation Script".ipThen you should cd into /tmp/install_erl (or wherever you put it)and type RUNME. .sp 2.nf %cd /tmp/install_erl %RUNME.fi.ipRUNME is the installation shell script. It will pop upan installation form, that you can fill out. You moveabout the form with the tab , return, and arrow keys.Certain fields are options that you toggle with thespacebar. Hitting Control-C will abort the installation. Hit Control-X to execute the installation. The fieldson the form are explained on the following page of these instructions. Forhelp on moving about the form hit Control-D..ipIf the termcap tool won't work for you (it has been tested butcould be susceptible to stty settings that differ from our site), thenuse the command:.nf %RUNME ask.fi.ipThis runs a version of the install that prompts you for the installationsettings and then proceeds with the installation as normal. The installation settings are stored in the file erldefs, which is aUnix shell script (/bin/sh). The following section describes the fields in theinstallation form, they match the variables you can set in the using the editor. The preferred installation method is using the form..sh 3 "Installation Form Field Definitions".nr $p 0.np Destination.ipwhere would you like to put the ESPS/waves+ binariesand support files. You should have enough space on thedisk. The directory will be created for you and overwriting anexisting directory not allowed..npCreate link.ipthis is a toggle field that asks if you want to createa link from /usr/esps to the destination directory. The default is NO, and we DISCOURAGE setting it to yes..ipAnother advantage of not creating this link is that without itit is possible to leave an old version of ESPS in place and operating..npOld Installation.ipEnter the location of your old ESPS/waves+ installation. If youdon't have one, make it empty (the default is /usr/esps). .npTape Device.ipthe tape device. On BSD Unix it might be /dev/rst8. On IBM AIX itmight be /dev/rmt0.1. This must be given..npNon rewinding Tape device.ipthe device name for the tape device that doesn't rewind. On BSD Unixit might be something like /dev/nrst8. On IBM AIX it might be /dev/rmt0.1.This must be given..npTape Host.ipthe hostname of the workstation with the tape drive.Leave empty if the tape drive is on the workstationthat you are logged into..npLog Installation.ipa toggle field that allows you to logthe installation to stdout, a Unix file or both. It ishandy to log it to both..np Log file.ipthe name of the logfile (if both or file is selected inthe log installation field)..nr $p 0.sh 1 "What you will need to start running ESPS/waves+".np$ESPS_BASE/bin will have to be on your path (ahead of any older versionsof ESPS/waves+ that you have installed. See belowfor an explanation of ESPS_BASE. You can verify the path by using thecommand "which testsd", which should find ESPS program testsd in $ESPS_BASE/bin..sp 2.nf example: setenv PATH $ESPS_BASE/bin:$PATH rehash which testsd.fi.sp 2.npThe Sun shared XView libraries must be on the pathspecified by LD_LIBRARY_PATH (see below)..npRemove or rename \fB.wave_pro\f files in your user's home directories.Old \fB.wave_pro\f files will not use some of the new features. Thebest approach for most users is to use the \fB.wave_pro\f in$ESPS_BASE/lib/waves . If you need to customize your environment, copy the \fB.wave_pro\f in $ESPS_BASE/lib to your home directory and edit as needed..npStart the licence manager, checkout a license, and run the demos. How to get and use a license are described in the next section andin Entropic Technical note "Living with the ESPS/waves+ License Manager"..sh 1 "Getting Your Key".ppIn order to get a license key you must run \fIelmadmin -c\fR to generate aserver code and to store your key. Run \fIelmadmin\fR on the host thatyou will be running the license manager daemon on. The key will onlywork if the daemon is run on the same host that the key was generatedfor. Two pieces of information are required for us to assign you yourkey(s): (1) your server code from \fIelmadmin -c\fR and (2) thesales order number (from a sticker on the media). An Entropic Key Requestform should accompany your shipment. Using the form will make getting keyseasier and less error prone..ppYou can get your keys either by voice telehone or by FAX. Keep thefact that we are located in the Eastern US time zone in mind when tryingto call. For customers outside of North America it might be best toFAX your request for your key (keys) to us at 202 546-6648. We'll FAXthe keys right back along with instructions for installing the key. To avoid errors in the server code, it would bebest to send the actual output of the \fIelmadmin -c\fR command ifpossible (see the Unix \fIscript\fR command)..ppIf you want to get your keys via voice telephoneit would be best if you can call us while you are at a terminal. Thatway we can give you the keys, wait while you enter them and be sure thateverything is working correctly. If that is not possible then you willhave to carefully write down the server code that \fIelmadmin -c\fRproduces. .ppIf you can call when sitting at a terminal, then do so when you are ready. CallEntropic at 202 547-1420, and tell the person that answers that you arecalling for a "license key". If possible, you will be given tosomeone who can help you. If that person is not available, then yournumber will be taken and we will call you back..ppIf you cannot call from a terminal, run the following command, writedown the server code and then kill the command when it asks for the key. When you copy the server code, watch out for the letter l vs the digit1, etc. Run the following command:.nf.ft CW% elmadmin -cYour server code is: XXX <- record this codePlease enter your key: <control>C <- kill the program now.ft R.fi.ppCall Entropic at the above number and request a license key. We will need that server code and your sales order number to give you a key..ppAfter you get your keysyou will use \fIelmadmin\fR to store them. The command is:.nf.ft CW% elmadmin -cYour server code is: XXX <- this should be the same as earlierPlease enter your key: XXX <- enter the first key given to you\fI<some information will be printed about the key>.ft CW% elmadmin -cYour server code is: XXX <- this should be the same as earlierPlease enter your key: XXX <- enter the second key given to you\fI<some information will be printed about the key>.ft R.fi.sh 1 "Starting the License Manager".ppBefore you can run \fIwaves+\fR or any of the ESPS programs, you must start the license manager daemon and allow it time toinitialize. To start the daemon, simply type the command:.nf.ft CW% elmd.ft R.fi.ppThis will spawn a background process and exit. If you prefer, you canput this command into your\fI/etc/rc.local\fR, so that it will be executed each time your machine boots. (If you do this, you will have to give thefull path as \fI$ESPS_BASE/bin/elmd\fR). .ppAfter you start the license manager daemon, you have to wait about fourminutes before it will respond to a request for a license. You can verifythat elmd is running by running \fBecheckout(ESPS-1)\f . It will tell youthat elmd is initializing and how long it will be until a key can be checkedout..ppThe license manager daemon makes entries in the file\fI$ESPS_BASE/lib/elm.log\fR. If you have trouble getting our programsto work correctly, we may ask you to look in this file and tell us whatis in there. This file will grow by a line each time a license ischecked in and out. If you want, you can zero the file with thecommand:
