Please refer to the online manual pages for all programs andlibrary functions mentioned below..sh 1 "SUMMARY OF MAJOR CHANGES".lpThis release is primarily a maintenance release and most of the changeswere bug fixes to programs and error corrections to the documentation.Major highlights include:.ip \ \ \ \(bumajor improvements to the filter design and filtering programs.ip \ \ \ \(bulicense manager startup delay reduced from 3 minutes to 1 minute.ip \ \ \ \(buautomatic checkout of ESPS license when required.ip \ \ \ \(bu\fIe2sphere\fR a license\-free program added to convert ESPS files to Sphere header files.ip \ \ \ \(buupdated documentation.sh 1 "CHANGES TO USER-LEVEL ESPS PROGRAMS".sh 2 "CHANGES TO FILTER PROGRAMS".lpIn the ESPS 4.2 release, the numerical stability of many filterprograms is improved.  The new \fIfilter2\fR program implements an IIR filterin cascade form of second order sections, rather than in direct formimplementation as in the old \fIfilter\fR program. The \fIfilt_spec\fR and \fIimpulse_rs\fR programs have beenre-written for numerical stability for high order IIR filters..lpThe library functions \fIblock_filter2(3-ESPS)\fR and \fIinit_fdata(3-ESPS)\fR, the core functions of \fIfilter2\fR, replace the old \fIblock_filter(3-ESPS)\fR in the library.  The function \fIfil_spectrum(3-ESPS)\fRis added to the library for computing filter spectral characteristics..lpChebyshev2 and elliptical IIR filter design methods are added in the\fIiir_filt\fR program.  The user-interface of \fIiir_filt\fR is made easier than theprevious release by requiring only the input parameters of passbandand stopband frequencies and loss characteristics..lpA binary \fIsfconvert\fR program has been written to replace the old \fIsfconvert\fRshell script for sampling frequency conversion.  The new programallows user to have complete control over trade-off betweencomputation efficiency vesus accuracy..lp\fIwmse_filt\fR now stores correct number of bandedges in the \fIbandedges\fRgeneric header item..sh 3 "SPECIFIC CHANGES TO FILTER PROGRAMS".np\fIiir_filt\fR - Major IIR filter improvements:.spElliptical and  Chebyshev II are now supported..spOnly need to specify stop/passband frequencies and stop/passband lossfor filter design.  No need to estimate the order, no need to knowwhat 3dB frequency (for Butterworth), or critical frequency (forCheveyshev1)is, if the user is not familiar with filter design.  The new \fIiir_filt\fRallows a precise control on filter characteristics..spThe program computes the optimal filter order.  But the userhas an option of over-riding the filter order by means of supplyinghis own filter order in the parameter file..spNo array parameter input.  This means you can run \fIiir_filt\fR with\fIxwaves\fR by the use of \fIxeparam\fR to design a filter and process the data on the fly..spMaximum passband gain is normalized to 0dB.  The old \fIiir_filt\fRhas its maximum passband amplitude different from 0dB if the filterorder is odd..np\fIwmse_filt\fR - this program now checks for a license checkout beforethe user enters the parameters.   The header item \fInbands\fR has beenfixed to store the correct number of bandedges..np\fIfilter2\fR - a new numerically-stable filtering program intended toreplace the existing program \fIfilter\fR.  .np\fIsfconvert\fR - this is an all new program (the old script by the samename is gone).   It has a number of new options and is much faster thanthe previous shell script version.   See the man page for details.This program is also linked to the name \fIesfconvert\fR to avoid a nameclash on SGI machines by an SGI supplied program named \fIsfconvert\fR..np\fIxsfconvert\fR - XIG version of the new \fIsfconvert\fR..np\fIimpulse_rs\fR - improved the numerical stability..np\fIfiltspec\fR - improved the numerical stability..np\fIplotspec\fR - improved the numerical stability..sh 2 "CHANGES TO OTHER PROGRAMS".np\fIvqasc\fR - this program has a new option \fB-l\fR to specify themaximum length of input lines (removing a hard-coded limit)..np\fIvq\fR - no longer limits the maximum codeword dimension to 1000.Allocations are done dynamically as needed..np\fIlpcana\fR - now uses \fIanal_method\fR correctly from the parameterfile..np\fIexprompt\fR - the output parameter file is now deleted if exit wasnot the result of clicking on DONE..np\fIme_spec\fR - the parameters \fIstartrec\fR and \fInrecs\fR have beenchanged to \fIstart\fR and \fInan\fR to be consistent with other ESPS programs..np\fIfea_stats\fR - the standard output has been made more readable fornon-stat files (changed output format from %f to %e).  An error message has been added to indicate if thecovariance matrix is singular..np\fIrefcof\fR - the \fB-S0\fR option has been fixed..np\fIpsps\fR - now prints the correct bandedges header items for FIRFT_FILT files.  This program is linked to the name \fIepsps\fR to avoid aname clash with a Sun supplied \fIpsps\fR (part of Open Windows)..np\fItestsd\fR - fixed sine drift problem..np\fIacf\fR - this program now correctly computes the start time of theoutput file in cases where input files have negative start times.  .np\fIfftcep\fR - this program now correctly outputs both real andimaginary parts of the complex cepstrum..np\fIfea_stats\fR - this program computes an inverse covariance matrixusing \fImatrix_inv\fR(3\-ESPS).   The old \fImatrix_inv(3\-ESPS)\fR had a brokensingular matrix check, so a bad inverse covariance matrix was generatedsilently in the \fIfea_stats\fR output..npThe following programs now place temporary files in the directoryspecified by the environment variable \fBESPS_TEMP_PATH\fR: acf, addfea,auto cross_cor, dither, frame, lpcana, mergefea, refcof, select, setmax,addgen, copysps, rem_dc, fea_stats, fea_edit, addclass, and comment..np\fIgpstohp\fR - this is the GPS to HP Laserjet filter.   This has beenimproved so that it produces smaller output files for a given plot.  Inmany cases the data sent to the printer has been cut in half.   Thisfilter is called by the plot programs when the \fB-Thp\fR option isused..np\fIplotsd\fR - this program used to subsample (plot by simply skippingpoints) if the number of points to plot exceeds the available number ofpixels.  Now the program plots the min and the max of a segment.  Thisproduces plots that look just like \fIxwaves\fR..np\fIplotsd\fR - fixed to work with ESPS common processing turned off andremoved the (now useless) \fB-P\fR option..np\fIplaytest\fR - fixed man page to mention that script lines are runtwice.  Also the (nonfunctional) \fB-n\fR option has been removed..np\fIplot3d\fR - after \fIplot3d\fR started up (on Suns), the initial graph wasoffset andscaled differently than the space the cursor was moving in.This was fixed by having the plot frame size established BEFORE theenclosed canvas was created..np\fIaddfea\fR - this program failed on SGI machines when the \fB-f\fR optionwas not used.   It has been fixed..np\fItofspec\fR - The \fB-s\fR option was added to allow specification of thegeneric headeritem \fIsf\fR in the output file.  This is a generally useful change as itpermits control over the frequency scale when the output is displayedvia \fIxwaves\fR.This change (when coupled with an \fIxspecav\fR script change) fixes thefairly serious \fIxwaves\fR display bug that shows incorrect frequency scalefor spectral averages.Note that there's a corresponding parameter as well (\fIsf\fR).  If it isnot present or has zero value (also the default of \fB-s\fR), then the oldbehavior is used..np\fIsend_xwaves\fR - Implemented and documented blocking in \fIsend_xwaves\fR.This permits any\fIxwaves\fR command to be issued reliably from \fIsend_xwaves\fR without concernabout completion of a previous command.This new version of \fIsend_xwaves\fR must be used with the new version of\fIxwaves\fR (3.1).  However, the old \fIsend_xwaves\fR will work ok with thenew \fIxwaves\fR..np\fIfft\fR and \fIfftinv\fR -.spNow both \fB-S0\fR on the command line and \fIstep\fR = 0 in the parameterfile imply a step equal to the default; the frame length.  .spOmitting the end of the range in the fft \fB-r\fR option is now equal tosetting \fInan\fR = 0 in the parameter file and implies processing from thestarting point through the end of the file..spThe manual page has been fixed to document nan adequately..spPrevious version would not run on a pipe with \fInan\fR = 0.
