.lo.ce 2.bInstallation Instructions for the Trial ESPS Binary Release.spDocument version: 1.2 2/23/90.sh 1 "Introduction".ppThis document describes how to install the Entropic Signal ProcessingSystem (ESPS) trial binary distribution. For Sun computers, \fIwaves+\fR is already installed into this distribution..ppThe difference between this trial copy of ESPS and the standardsystem, is that the trial does not include the programming library; soyou cannot write and link ESPS programs..sh 1 "Floating License System".ppESPS uses floating license technology, which allows you to install theactual files at any location on your network you choose. A licensemanager daemon must be run on a particular host on your network, butESPS and \fIwaves+\fR can be run on any machine (of the correctarchitecture type) on your network, as long as it can connect to thehost with the daemon. .ppAfter you have read in the tape contents and set up the links asdescribed below, you will run a program on the host wherethe license daemon will be run; the program will return a unique server code. CallEntropic with this code and we will give you the trial license key. .ppThe trial license key is good for a single user at a time, for 15 days..sh 1 "Tape Contents".ppThe enclosed tape is a Unix \fItar\fR tape with one or more tar filescontaining an ESPS binary directory tree. The following table shows thedirectory names of the various trial products as they might appear onthe tape. The sizes given are approximate..TSbox, center, tab(;);c c c cl l l d.Machine;Product Code;Directory on Tape;Size (MB)_Sun 3;ESPS3b-S3;esps.sun3_trial;26Sun 4 (Sparc);ESPS3b-S4;esps.sun4_trial;19Sun 386i;ESPS3b-S386i;esps.sun386_trial;16Masscomp;ESPS3b-M;esps.mcX_trial;17;;esps.mcS_trial;17Convex;ESPS3b-C;esps.cx_trial;17DS3100;ESPS3b-DS3100;esps.ds3100_trial;26HP300;ESPS3b-H300;esps.hp300_trial;17HP800;ESPS3b-H800;esps.hp800_trial;26.TE.ppFor Masscomp systems, there will be two versions of the binary supplied. One is for systems with X windows (Masscomp X11) and the other is forsystems with SP40 graphics. Use the one that is correct for yourconfiguration..ppFor Sun systems with \fIwaves+\fR, then there will be at least one demo directory on the tape;\fIdemo.text\fR and perhaps \fIdemo.dsp\fR and/or \fIdemo.sparc\fR.The demo directories are useful for checking out the installation andfor an introduction into the capabilities of \fIwaves+\fR. The first of these displays text as it runs describing the demo. Theother two are for systems with the AT&T VME DSP board or Sparcstation Imachines with the built in codec and speaker. These demoscontain speech files and talk to describe what ishappening in the demo. These directories are quite large, due to thespeech files. They will be the last directories on the tape; so if you do notwant to read them in (about 10 Megabytes each) then kill the \fItar\fR when yousee it starting to bring in \fIdemo.dsp\fR or \fIdemo.sparc\fR..sh 1 "Installation".ppTo install theproduct, simply read the tar tape into your system. In order tooperate correctly, ESPS must be rooted at \fI/usr/esps\fR. This can bedone by either reading the tape directly into \fI/usr\fR, and changingthe name of the appropriate ESPS directory to \fIesps\fR, or by readingthe tape in somewhere else and putting a symbolic link from\fI/usr/esps\fR to the correct directory from the tape. .sh 2 "Our Suggested Method".ppRead the tape into a reasonable location, say \fI/home/esps\fR. Then inthere you will have the binary directories, the demo directories (if youhave \fIwaves+\fR) and perhaps the DSP driver. (The DSP driver is notnormally supplied with trial license copies.)For example: (replace XXX with your tape name, e.g. rst8).nf.ft CW% cd /home% mkdir esps% cd esps% tar xvpf /dev/XXX % ln -s /home/esps/esps.sun4_trial /usr/esps.ft R.fi.ppIf you have an HP system, the tape as made using the HP blocking program\fItcio\fR. Note also, that on HP systems, do not use the \fB-p\fR option on\fItar\fR.Replace the \fItar\fR command with the following:.nf.ft CW% tcio -i /dev/rct/XXX | tar xvf - .ft R.fi.ppYou might have to go super-user in order to put the linkonto \fI/usr\fR. Note the \fB-p\fR option on \fItar\fR. This is neededto preserve the modes of some directories. However, on some systems we have seen this cause problems (files couldnot be created). If this happens to you, redo the \fItar\fR without the\fB-p\fR option, and after the tape has been read, do:.nf.ft CW% chmod 0777 esps.*/man/cat*.ft R.fi.ppThis will set the mode of the manual page directories correctly..sh 1 "Search Paths".ppIn order to execute ESPS programs users must place the ESPS binarydirectory on their default search path. If ESPS is installed asdescribed above, that path would be \fI/usr/esps/bin\fR. Make sure that all potential users have this on their path..ppYour search path is usually determined by a statement in your \fI.cshrc\fR or \fI.profile\fR. But your case might be different, depending on the shell that you use. In any event, you must ensurethat all ESPS and \fIwaves+\fR users have the ESPS \fIbin\fR directoryon their path..ppYou can determine that the ESPS installation is correct up to thispoint, by running \fIeman\fR to view an ESPS manual page. After you have changed your path try:.nf.ft CW% eman fft.ft R.fi.ppThis should display the manual page for the fft program. If this works, then all your paths are set up correctly and you are ready to get akey. If \fIeman\fR was not found, then check your path.If \fIeman\fR was found, but it failed to find the\fIfft\fR manual page, then check that the link to \fI/usr/esps\fR iscorrect..sh 1 "Getting Your Key".ppIt would be best if you can call us while you are at a terminal. Thatway we can give you the keys, wait while you enter them and be sure thateverything is working correctly. If that is not possible then you willhave to carefully write down the server code that \fIelmadmin\fRproduces..ppIf you can call when sitting at a terminal, then do so when you are ready. CallEntropic at 202 547-1420, and tell the person that answers that you arecalling for a "trial license key". If possible, you will be given tosomeone who can help you. If that person is not available, then yournumber will be taken and we will call you back..ppIf you cannot call from a terminal, run the following command, writedown the server code and then kill the command when it asks for the key. When you copy the server code, watch out for the letter l vs the digit1, etc. Run the following command:.nf.ft CW% elmadmin -cYour server code is: XXX <- record this codePlease enter your key: <control>C <- kill the program now.ft R.fi.ppCall Entropic at the above number and request a "trial license key". We will need that server code and your architecture type (Sun3, Sun4,etc), to give you a key..ppWhen you call for the key, you will be assigned a contact at Entropicwho will be available to answer your questions during your trialperiod. If you wish, you can discuss your application with yourcontact, who might be able to suggest ways that ESPS and \fIwaves+\fR can be usedto solve your problems..ppAfter you get your keys (two if you want to run \fIwaves+\fR and ESPS),you will use \fIelmadmin\fR to store them. The command is:.nf.ft CW% elmadmin -cYour server code is: XXX <- this should be the same as earlierPlease enter your key: XXX <- enter the first key given to you\fI<some information will be printed about the key>.ft CW% elmadmin -cYour server code is: XXX <- this should be the same as earlierPlease enter your key: XXX <- enter the second key given to you\fI<some information will be printed about the key>.ft R.fi.sh 1 "Starting the License Manager".ppBefore you can run \fIwaves+\fR or any of the ESPS programs, you must start the license manager daemon and allow it time toinitialize. To start the daemon, simply type the command:.nf.ft CW% elmd.ft R.fi.ppThis will spawn a background process and exit. If you prefer, you canput this command in \fI/etc/rc.local\fR, so that it will be executedeach time you machine boots. (If you do this, you will have to give thefull path as \fI/usr/esps/bin/elmd\fR). For the trial license, it might be just aswell to type the command once and leave it running. You only need tostart the daemon again if the machine it is running on is rebooted..ppAfter you start the license manager daemon, you have to wait about fourminutes before it will respond to a request for a license..ppThe license manager daemon makes entries in the file\fI/usr/esps/lib/elm.log\fR. If you have trouble getting our programsto work correctly, we may ask you to look in this file and tell us whatis in there. This file will grow by a line each time a license ischecked in and out. If you want, you can zero the file with thecommand:.nf.ft CW% elmadmin -z.ft R.fi.ppThis command must be run as super-user.As with \fIecheckout\fR and \fIwaves+\fR, the environment variable\fBESI_HOST\fR must be set to name of the host running the daemon, unless it is running on the same host that you run \fIelmadmin\fR on..ppNote that truncating the log file by other means would be ineffectual, since\fIelmd\fR keeps the log file open at all times. The next \fIelmd\fRlog file write would simply use the old file pointer, filling the to theoriginal length. The \fB-z\fR option must be used to truncate thefile..ppA suggested method to clean up the log file every evening is to run thefollowing by your \fIcrontab\fR system. You will need your systemadministrator to set this up..nf.ft CWcp elm.log elm.log.oldelmadmin -z.ft R.fi.ppNote that there is probably no need to bother with this for the triallicense, as the log file should not grow large enough to worry about..sh 1 "Checking Out a License".ppBefore running any ESPS programs you must checkout an ESPS license. This allows any user on the machine with a checked out license to runESPS programs. The trial license allows ESPS programs to be run on oneCPU at a time. .ppIf you are running ESPS or \fIwaves+\fR on a different CPU than thelicense manager daemon is running on, you have to set the environmentvariable \fBESI_HOST\fR to identify the name of the host on which the license managerdaemon is running. For example, if the license manager daemon is running on a CPUwith hostname \fIfido\fR, you would do:.nf.ft CW% setenv ESI_HOST fido.ft R.fi.ppThis environment variable tells ESPS programs where the daemon isrunning. If you are running the ESPS program or \fIwaves+\fR on thesame host as the daemon, then it is not necessary to set\fBESI_HOST\fR. To checkout a license you do:.nf.ft CW% echeckout.ft R.fi.pp\fIEcheckout\fR will checkout a license, if possible, and then wait inthe background. It will tell you if it has succeeded and return aprocess ID number. To free the license, you must kill this process. For example:.nf.ft CW% echeckoutecheckout[20337]: ESPS License checked out OK.echeckout[20337]: Do "kill 20337" to free license..ft R.fi.ppFor purposes of the trial license, you can probably just run\fIecheckout\fR once and leave it running; unless you want to be able tofree the license and pick it up on another CPU. You will have tocheckout the license again if the machine reboots (but first you mustrestart the license manager daemon and wait four minutes). To run \fIwaves+\fR, you do not have to checkout a license first..ppTo free the ESPS license so that it can be used on another CPU on thenetwork you kill the process spawned by \fIecheckout\fR. For example, given the process number in the above example, you would do:.ft CW.nf% kill 20337.ft R.fi.ppThis method of freeing an ESPS license by using \fIkill\fR is only usedwith the trial license package. The standard system includes acommand to check in an ESPS license when it is no longer being used..ppTo run \fIwaves+\fR, you do not have to checkout a license first since\fIwaves+\fR does so when it starts up. However, in order for otherprograms called by \fIwaves+\fR to work correctly, you have to have anESPS license checked out while you run waves (for example to do aspectrogram). Please note that this is a restriction of the triallicense only. In the standard product, you do not need to have an ESPSlicense checked out to run \fIwaves+\fR related programs such as\fIsgram\fR..ppYou can check on the status of your licenses by using the command:.ft CW.nf% elmadmin -l.ft R.fi.sh 1 "Getting Ready to use Waves+".ppEveryone that is going to use \fIwaves+\fRshould copy the following three files from \fI/usr/esps/lib/waves\fR to their home directory: \fI.wave_pro\fR, \fInb_params\fR, and \fIwb_params\fR.These are parameter files for \fIwaves+\fR. See the \fIwaves+\fRmanual page for details..ppUsers should also edit their path assignment in their \fI.cshrc\fR (orwhatever they use) to include \fI/usr/esps/bin\fR on their search path..ppCopy the files in \fI/usr/esps/demo\fR to your working directory beforeusing them with \fIwaves+\fR. This version of \fIwaves+\fR will try to writesome temporary files to the dirctory that the input file comes from(\fI/usr/esps/demo\fR in this case) and you might not have writepermission on this directory. We consider this a bug, which will befixed in the next version..ppAlso note that all of the manual pages are stored online and can beaccessed by the command \fIeman\fR..sh 1 "ESPS and Waves+ Demo Scripts".ppThe best way to check out the installation ofthe product is to change into the directory \fI/usr/esps/demo\fR and runthe demo scripts in there. Before running any of the demo scripts, you must run the script\fIcreatefiles\fR that creates some ESPS data files used by the otherdemos. There is also a README file in that directory. We stronglysuggest that you take the time to try these examples. Not only do theyprovide an introduction to some ESPS commands, but they serve as a checkon the installation. Note that you must have write permission on thisdirectory to run the demos. The assumption is that these will be run bythe ESPS installer/maintainer. This is one reason why we prefer not to installESPS as root, but as a regular user..ppIf you do not have write permission on the \fIdemo\fR directory, simplycopy the contents to a directory that you can write into..ppWe also suggest that you use \fIeman -k\fR (followed by a keyword tosearch for) to familiarize yourself with the system. See the \fIeman\fRmanual page for details. .ppEnclosed with this package is another document that describes the\fIwaves+\fR demo scripts..sh 1 "In Case of Difficulty".ppIf you have questions about the installation process, or havedifficultly running the script please call Entropic for help..sp.TSbox,center,tab(;);l | l.Entropic Speech, Inc.;Voice: 202 547-1420600 Pa.
