Installation Instructions for the ESPS Binary Release

This document describes how to install the Entropic Signal Processing
System (ESPS) binary distribution.   If you ordered the \fIwaves+\fR
product at the same time as this product, then it will already be
installed into this distribution.

ESPS uses floating license technology, which allows you to install the
actual files at any location on your network you choose.   A license
manager daemon must be run on a particular host on your network, but
ESPS and \fIwaves+\fR can be run on any machine (of the correct
architecture type) on your network, as long as it can connect to the
host with the daemon.

After you have read in the tape contents and set up the links as
described below, you will run a program on the host where
the license daemon will be run; the program will
return a unique server code.   Call
Entropic with this code and your sales order number (our number assigned to
your order) to request your license key.    For customers outside of
North America, it might be better to request the key via FAX.
Details for getting your key are given below.

The enclosed tape is a Unix \fItar\fR tape with one or more tar files
containing an entire ESPS binary directory tree.
The following table shows the directory names of the various
products as they might appear on the tape.

If you also ordered the DSP32 support kit, then the tape will
contain one or more directories called
\fIdsp32.sun3_OS3\fR, \fIdsp32.sun3_OS4\fR, \fIdsp32.sun3x\fR, 
or \fIdsp32.sun4\fR

To install the
product, simply read the tar tape into your system.   In order to
operate correctly, ESPS must be rooted at \fI/usr/esps\fR.  This can be
done by either reading the tape directly into \fI/usr\fR,  and changing
the name of the appropriate ESPS directory to \fIesps\fR, or by reading
the tape in somewhere else and putting a symbolic link from
\fI/usr/esps\fR to the correct directory from the tape.

\fBSun 386i Users NOTE\fR: ESPS and \fIwaves+\fR is rooted at
\fI/files/esps\fR, instead of \fI/usr/esps\fR on Sun 386i systems.  In
the following descriptions, keep this in mind.

Read the tape into a reasonable location, say \fI/home/esps\fR.  Then in
there you will have the binary directories, 
and perhaps the DSP driver.
For example:  (replace XXX with your tape name, e.g. rst8)

You might have to go super-user in order to put the link
onto \fI/usr\fR.  Note the \fB-p\fR option on \fItar\fR.  This is needed
to preserve the modes of some directories.   
However, on some systems we have seen this cause problems (files could
not be created).  If this happens to you, redo the \fItar\fR without the
\fB-p\fR option, and after the tape has been read, do:

This will set the mode of the manual page directories correctly.

In order to execute ESPS programs users must place the ESPS binary
directory on their default search path.   If ESPS is installed as
described above, that path would be \fI/usr/esps/bin\fR.    
Make sure that all potential users have this on their path.

Your search path is usually determined by a statement in your
\fI.cshrc\fR
or \fI.profile\fR.   But your case might be different,
depending on the shell that you use.   In any event, you must ensure
that all ESPS and \fIwaves+\fR users have the ESPS \fIbin\fR directory
on their path.

You can determine that the ESPS installation is correct up to this
point, by running \fIeman\fR to view an ESPS manual page.
After you have changed your path try:

This should display the manual page for the fft program.  If this works,
then all your paths are set up correctly  and you are ready to get a
key.  If \fIeman\fR was not found, then check your path.
If \fIeman\fR was found, but it failed to find the
\fIfft\fR manual page, then check that the link to \fI/usr/esps\fR is
correct.

In order to get a license key you must run \fIelmadmin -c\fR to generate a
server code and to store your key.   Run \fIelmadmin\fR on the host that
you will be running the license manager daemon on.   The key will only
work if the daemon is run on the same host that the key was generated
for.   Two pieces of information are required for us to assign you your
key(s): (1) your server code from \fIelmadmin -c\fR and (2) the
sales order number (from a sticker on the media).

You can get your keys either by voice telehone or by FAX.   Keep the
fact that we are located in the Eastern US time zone in mind when trying
to call.   For customers outside of North America it might be best to
FAX your request for your key (keys) to us at 202 546-6648.  We'll FAX
the keys right back along with instructions for installing the key.   
To avoid errors in the server code, it would be
best to send the actual output of the \fIelmadmin -c\fR command if
possible (see the Unix \fIscript\fR command).

If you want to get your keys via voice telephone
it would be best if you can call us while you are at a terminal.  That
way we can give you the keys, wait while you enter them and be sure that
everything is working correctly.   If that is not possible then you will
have to carefully write down the server code that \fIelmadmin -c\fR
produces.

If you can call when sitting at a terminal, 
then do so when you are ready.   Call
Entropic at  202 547-1420, and tell the person that answers that you are
calling for a "license key".   If possible, you will be given to
someone who can help you.  If that person is not available, then your
number will be taken and we will call you back.

If you cannot call from a terminal, run the following command, write
down the server code and then kill the command when it asks for the key.
When you copy the server code, watch out for the letter l vs the digit
1, etc.  Run the following command:

Call Entropic at the above number and request a license key.  
We will need that server code and your sales order number to give you a key.

After you get your keys
you will use \fIelmadmin\fR to store them.  The command is:

Before you can run \fIwaves+\fR or any of the ESPS programs,
you must start the license manager daemon and allow it time to
initialize.    To start the daemon, simply type the command:

This will spawn a background process and exit.   If you prefer, you can
put this command into your
\fI/etc/rc.local\fR, so that it will be executed 
each time your machine boots.  (If you do this, you will have to give the
full path as \fI/usr/esps/bin/elmd\fR).

After you start the license manager daemon, you have to wait about four
minutes before it will respond to a request for a license.

The license manager daemon makes entries in the file
\fI/usr/esps/lib/elm.log\fR.    If you have trouble getting our programs
to work correctly, we may ask you to look in this file and tell us what
is in there.   This file will grow by a line each time a license is
