This document provides notes relevant to release 3.3b of ESPS.  Please
read this document and the Installation Instructions completely before
installing this release of ESPS.  This note documents changes to ESPS
since the revisions 3.3 and 3.3a.  Please read the 3.3 and 3.3a
release notes first.

Please duplicate this section and make it available to all current users of
ESPS.  This information is needed by others than just the ESPS
installer.  Differences that affect the \fIwaves\fP+ standalone 
products are marked with an asterisk (\fIwaves+\fP standalone 
includes a subset of ESPS).

This version is the first release for the DEC DecStation 3100.  This
release contains a machine independent I/O module that allows files
written by ESPS implementations on any supported machine type to be
read by any other ESPS implementation.   When ESPS programs create
output ESPS files, they are either written in the machine's native data
format (usually referring to floating point format and byte order) or in
Entropic's external data representation (EDR).   Files written in EDR
can always be read by any ESPS implementation on any supported machine
type.

The default is to produce files in the host machine's native data
format.  This is the most efficient if the files will usually be used on
that machine, since no data conversions are required.  If the Unix
environment variable \fBESPS_EDR\fR is defined and has a value of
\fIon\fR (done by the command \fIsetenv ESPS_EDR on\fR in the C-shell),
then all ESPS files written will be in EDR.   If you intend to work
primarily on the DEC machine, then do not set this variable.

This version can read ESPS files that are in EDR format, DS3100 native
format, Sun 386i native format, and the native formats from all Sun
models, Masscomp, and HP.   If you need to send an ESPS file to a system
running a previous version of ESPS (prior to 3.3bDEC, eg. plain 3.3b)
then set \fBESPS_EDR\fR to \fIon\fR and the file will be compatible.
The next version of ESPS for all other system types will be able to
process DS3100 native format files also.

The \fIcopysps\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) man page stated incorrectly that
\fIcopysps\fP does not work with SD files.  In fact it does.  The man
page was changed to describe the supported behavior.  A (Sun only) bug
that caused core dumps when copying entire SD files was fixed.

\fIMlplot\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) and \fIgenplot\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1)
were changed to fix a bug that caused a core dump when passed an
invalid data range.

The Masscomp \fIxmcd\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) binary was fixed to handle 
icons properly.

The \fB-E\fP option on \fIsgram\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) was being
ignored.  Also, the generic header item "pre_emphasis" was not being 
written to the output file.  These both have been fixed.

The \fB-S\fP option on \fIaddfeahd\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) has been fixed
to work properly.

The new program \fImergefea\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) was added.  This
merges two FEA files so that output records contain fields from both.
For an example of its use, see the \fIratios\fP demo (next item).

A new demo was added to the ESPS demo directory to show how ESPS tools
can be combined to compute the ratios of power (or log power) in
different frequency bands for a sequence of sampled data frames, with
the results placed in a FEA file.  The script \fIratios.demo\fP sets
up the demo.  Power ratios or log power ratios are then computed
respectively using \fIratios\fP or \fIlogratios\fP.  The README file
in the demo directory has been revised to describe the new demo.

The new program \fIfeafunc\fP (1\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) was added.
\fIFeafunc\fP accepts a FEA file containing arbitrary fields.  It
produces a FEA file with records that are copies of the input records
plus an additional field containing the results of applying the
functional form \fIg*F(element) + d\fP to each element of a selected
input field, where \fIg\fP is a multiplicative constant, \fIF\fP is a
single-valued scalar function (\fIlog, ln, sqrt, abs, exp\fP), and
\fId\fP is an additive constant.

A new library routine \fIcopy_genhd_uniq\fP (3\-\s-1ESPS\s+1) was
added.  This copies generic header items from one header to another,
but generates unique names in the case of conflicts.  (The routine
\fIcopy_genhd\fP overwrites existing items in the case of duplicate
names.)

A new program \fImbrot\fR program has been added.  This program computes
elements of the Mandelbrot set and writes a file that can be viewed with
\fIimage\fR.

One of the makefiles in the source kit (\fIwmse_filt\fR) tries to run
the Unix \fIeqn\fR program (to process an equation in the manual page).
Our DS3100 did not have \fIeqn\fR, but we don't know if this is the
general case or not.  The program does get properly installed.
There is a copy of the processed manual page in the source directory
which will be installed if \fIeqn\fR fails on your system.
