Installation Instructions for Standalone Waves+

The enclosed tape (or diskettes) contains the \fIwaves+\fR binary
directory (or directories) and one to three demo directories.

Standalone \fIwaves+\fR consists of a binary subset of the Entropic
Signal Processing System (ESPS) and the \fIwaves+\fR programs, including
\fIwaves+\fR, \fIspectrum\fR, and \fIlabel\fR.   The directory 
on the tape contains a standard ESPS directory
structure with the \fIwaves+\fR programs and ESPS programs in
place.

The name of the \fIwaves+\fR binary directory depends on the target machine
type.   If you ordered \fIwaves+\fR for more than one
machine type, then all of those directories will be on the tape.  The
following table shows the directory names of the various \fIwaves+\fR
products as they might appear on the tape.

Note that for Sun3, there may be two versions of the waves binary; one
compiled for the 68881 floating point chip and one compiled for the Sun3
FPA board.  Use the one that is appropriate for your configuration.

The demo directories are useful for checking out the installation and
for an introduction into the capabilities of \fIwaves+\fR.  There may be
three demo directories on the tape; \fIdemo.text\fR, \fIdemo.dsp\fR, and
\fIdemo.sparc\fR.
The first of these displays text as it runs describing the demo.  The
second one is for systems with the AT&T VME DSP board.  
The directory \fIdemo.sparc\fR is for Sparcstation I machines.  This demo
uses the built in codec and speaker.
\fIDemo.dsp\fR and \fIdemo.sparc\fR 
directories contain speech files used to describe what is
happening in the demo.    These two demo directories are each about 10
megabytes due to the 
speech files.  If present, they will be at the end of
the tape; so if you do not
want to read them in, kill the \fItar\fR when you
see it starting to bring in \fIdemo.dsp\fR or \fIdemo.sparc\fR.
The DSP demo is only included if you ordered the DSP driver kit.
The \fIdemo.sparc\fR directory is only included if your order indicated
a Sparcstation I.

If you also ordered the DSP32 support kit, then that product will be on
this tape also.
That directory will be either
\fIdsp32.sun3_OS3\fR, \fIdsp32.sun3_OS4\fR, \fIdsp32.sun3x\fR, 
or \fIdsp32.sun4\fR.

This package also includes (along with these instructions) manual
pages for all included programs and installation instructions for the
DSP32 Support Kit, if you also ordered it.

To install this product, simply choose a location and read the tape
contents in.   Except for a Sun386i, for \fIwaves+\fR to operate correctly, 
the directory \fI/usr/esps\fR must
point to the appropriate \fIwaves+\fR directory from this tape.  The
best way to do this is to read in the directories and then put a
symbolic link on \fI/usr\fR that points to the \fIwaves+\fR directory
from the tape.   Or you can read the tape into \fI/usr\fR and then
change the name of the \fIwaves+\fR directory to \fIesps\fR.

In the case of a Sun386i, the directory \fI/files/esps\fR must 
point to the appropriate \fIwaves+\fR directory from this tape.  The
best way to do this is to read in the directories and then put a
symbolic link on \fI/files\fR that points to the \fIwaves+\fR directory
from the tape.   Or you can read the tape into \fI/files\fR and then
change the name of the \Iwaves+\fR directory to \fIesps\fR.

This assumes that you have write permission on \fI/usr\fR.

Note the use of the \fB-p\fR option on \fItar\fR.   This is required to
preserve the modes of the directories; in particular the \fIman/cat\fR
directories must be writtable for \fIeman\fR to work correctly.

In the following discussion, the name \fIesps\fR means either
\fI/usr/esps\fR for all machines other than Sun386i, and
\fI/files/esps\fR for Sun386i.

Everyone that is going to use \fIwaves+\fR
should copy the following three files from \fIesps/lib/waves\fR: 
\fI.wave_pro\fR, 
\fInb_params\fR, and \fIwb_params\fR to their home directory.
These are parameter files for \fIwaves+\fR.   See the \fIwaves+\fR
manual page for details.

Users should also edit their path assignment in their \fI.cshrc\fR (or
whatever they use) to include \fIesps/bin\fR
on their search path.

To aid in testing the installation and to help you learn to use
\fIwaves+\fR (and related programs), some ESPS data files can be found
in \fIesps/demo\fR.    
This directory is in addition to the demo directories mentioned
earlier.
Each of these files can be input to
\fIwaves+\fR for display.    You can also use the program \fIpsps\fR to
look at these files and to examine their headers.   Notice the record
keeping that is done in ESPS when you look at these files with
\fIpsps\fR and \fIcomment -a\fR.

Copy the files in \fIesps/demo\fR to your working directory before
looking at them with \fIwaves+\fR.  
This version of \fIwaves+\fR will try to write
some temporary files to the directory that the input file comes from
(\fIesps/demo\fR in this case) and you might not have write
permission on this directory.   We consider this a bug, and this will be
changed in the next version.

Also note that all of the manual pages are stored online and can be
accessed by the command \fIeman\fR.

After you are satisfied that all is well, up to this point, you should
install the device driver, if you ordered it.   You can delay this,
however, if you want to, since \fIwaves+\fR will operate without the
board.  Proceed to the instructions for installing the device driver.
