This document describes how to install the Waves+ Version 2
binary distribution.

Waves+ uses floating license technology, which allows you to install the
actual files at any location on your network you choose.   A license
manager daemon must be run on a particular host on your network, but
\fIwaves+\fR can be run on any machine (of the correct
architecture type) on your network, as long as it can connect to the
host with the daemon.

After you have installed the tape contents as described below, you will
run a program on the host where the license daemon will be run; the
program will return a unique server code.  Call Entropic with this
code and your sales order number (our number assigned to your order)
to request your license key.  For customers outside of North America,
it might be better to request the key via FAX.  Details for getting
your key are given below.

The enclosed tape (or diskettes) contains the \fIwaves+\fR binary
directory (or directories).

The \fIwaves+\fR package consists of a binary subset of the Entropic
Signal Processing System (ESPS) and the \fIwaves+\fR programs, including
\fIwaves+\fR, \fIspectrum\fR, and \fIlabel\fR
(or \fIxwaves+\fR, \fIxspectrum\fR, and \fIxlabel\fR for X Window
systems).
The directory 
on the tape contains a standard ESPS directory
structure with the \fIwaves+\fR programs and ESPS programs in
place.  Here is the space you will need for installation:

If you also ordered the DSP32 support kit, then that product will be on
this tape also.
That directory will be either

pages for all included programs and installation instructions for the
DSP32 Support Kit, if you also ordered it.

First you should change  directory  to  /tmp  (or  just
about  anywhere)  and tar in the installation programs.  They will
reside in a directory called install_erl.

You will need write permission in this directory, and the directory
which you choose to install waves+ into. You may have to be the root
user (see section below.

Then you should cd into /tmp/install_erl  (or  wherever you put it)
and type  RUNME.

RUNME is the installation shell script.
It prompts you for the installation
settings and then extracts the waves+ software from the tape.
The installation settings are stored in the file erldefs, which is a
Unix shell script (/bin/sh).  The following section describes the information
the installation will require.

where would you like to put  the  waves+  binaries
and support files.  You should have enough space on the
disk. The directory will be created for you and overwriting an
existing directory not allowed.

Create link

this is a toggle field that asks if you want to  create
a  link  from  /usr/esps  to the destination directory.
The default is NO, and we DISCOURAGE setting it to yes.

Another advantage of not creating this link is that without it
it is possible to leave an old version of ESPS/waves+ in place and operating.

Old Installation

Enter the location of your  old ESPS/waves+  installation. If you
don't have one, leave it empty (the default is empty).

Tape Device

the tape device.  On BSD Unix it might be /dev/rst8. On IBM AIX it
might be /dev/rmt0.1.  This must be given.

Non rewinding Tape device
.ip
the device name for the tape device that doesn't rewind.  On BSD Unix
it might be something like /dev/nrst8. On IBM AIX it might be /dev/rmt0.1.
This must be given.

Tape Host

the hostname of the workstation with  the  tape  drive.
Leave  empty  if  the  tape drive is on the workstation
that you are logged into.

Log Installation

a toggle field that allows you to  log
the installation to stdout, a Unix file or both.  It is
handy to log it to both.

the name of the logfile (if both or file is selected in
the log installation field).

Users should add a definition of environment variable ESPS_BASE to their
 \fB.cshrc\fR (or whatever they use).  It should be set to the destination
that waves+ was installed to. \fIThis variable must be defined for most 
waves+ to run correctly. \fR

Also edit that file to include \fI$ESPS_BASE/bin\fR on their search path.

The Sun shared XView libraries  must  be  on  the  path
specified by LD_LIBRARY_PATH (see below).

Remove or rename \fB.wave_pro\f files in your user's home directories.
Old \fB.wave_pro\f files will not use some of the new features.  The
best approach for most users is to use the \fB.wave_pro\f in
$ESPS_BASE/lib/waves .  If you need to customize your environment, copy the
 \fB.wave_pro\f in $ESPS_BASE/lib to your home directory and edit as needed.

Also note that all of the manual pages are stored online and can be
accessed by the command \fIeman\fR.

After you are satisfied that all is well, up to this point, you should
install the DSP board device driver, if you ordered one.   
Proceed to the instructions for installing the device driver.
You can delay this,
however, if you want to, since \fIwaves+\fR will operate without the
board.

In order to get a license key you must run \fIelmadmin -c\fR to generate a
server code and to store your key.   Run \fIelmadmin\fR on the host that
you will be running the license manager daemon on. ENSURE that environment
varialble ESPS_BASE is set to the directory that waves+ was installed to.
The key will only
work if the daemon is run on the same host that the key was generated
for.   Two pieces of information are required for us to assign you your
key(s): (1) your server code from \fIelmadmin -c\fR and (2) the
sales order number (from a sticker on the media).   An Entropic Key Request
form should accompany your shipment.  Using the form will make getting keys
easier and less error prone.

You can get your keys either by voice telehone or by FAX.   Keep the
fact that we are located in the Eastern US time zone in mind when trying
to call.   For customers outside of North America it might be best to
FAX your request for your key (keys) to us at 202 546-6648.  We'll FAX
the keys right back along with instructions for installing the key.
To avoid errors in the server code, it would be
best to send the actual output of the \fIelmadmin -c\fR command if
possible (see the Unix \fIscript\fR command).

If you want to get your keys via voice telephone
it would be best if you can call us while you are at a terminal.  That
way we can give you the keys, wait while you enter them and be sure that
everything is working correctly.   If that is not possible then you will
have to carefully write down the server code that \fIelmadmin -c\fR
produces.

If you can call when sitting at a terminal,
then do so when you are ready.   Call
Entropic at  202 547-1420, and tell the person that answers that you are
calling for a "license key".   If possible, you will be given to
someone who can help you.  If that person is not available, then your
number will be taken and we will call you back.

If you cannot call from a terminal, run the following command, write
down the server code and then kill the command when it asks for the key.
When you copy the server code, watch out for the letter l vs the digit
1, etc.  Run the following command:
