<p> <font size="2"><b>河源</b></font>，历史悠久。据考证，早在公元前10000年至4000年，东江中上游流域便有人类繁衍生息。上古时代，河源市辖区先属沃土次州，后属杨州。春秋战国时称百越之地，属楚。秦始皇三十三年（公元前214年），秦平百越，置南海郡，在东江中上游流域设置龙川县，首任县令是后来统一岭南，被汉高祖封为南越王的赵佗，县治设在现龙川县佗城镇，县域包括现在的河源市、惠州市、汕尾市，（部分）以及兴宁、五华、江西省寻邬县等地。南朝齐永明元年（483年），龙川析土置河源县；明正德十三年（1518年），龙川析土置和平县；明崇祯七年（1634年），和平、河源析土置连平县；明隆庆三年（1569年）由长乐县（今五华县）、归善县（今惠阳、惠东县、古属川县）析土置永安县，民国三年改名紫金县。河源地区汉朝属南海郡，两晋南北朝属东官郡，南梁天监二年（503年）属梁化郡，隋唐属循州（期间曾更名龙川郡、雷乡郡等）。南汉乾享元年（917年）析循州分置祯州、循州，河源地区属循州。宋天禧五年（1021年）改祯州为惠州。明洪武二年（1369年）循州并入惠州。河源地区在1913年属广东省革命政府东江行政委员会；新中国成立后，先后属东江行政委员会、东江行政专员公署、粤东行政公署、韶关地区、惠阳地区等。1988年1月7日，国务院批准撤销河源县，设立河源市，辖源城区、郊区、龙川县、紫金县、连平县、和平县；3月2日市委、市政府正式挂牌办公。1992年8月国务院批准列入沿海经济开放区，成为既可享受山区优惠政策、又可享受沿海开放优惠政策的地区。1993年11月8日，国务院批准撤销河源市郊区，设立东源县，县委、县政府驻仙塘镇。河源市是东江流域客家人的聚居中心。上古时期，这一带居民属瑶、苗、高山等少数民族。“百越”时期，来自江浙一带的越民散居于少数民族之中，对开化粤地起了重要作用。秦平百越后，迁陕陇之民居粤，带来了黄河文化。此后，凡遇中原战乱，都有一批批的移民进入岭南。这些南迁之民与当地土著民族相互同化，逐步形成了客家文明。所以，客家人既有北方人的豪放、热情，又有南方人的机灵、幽默。在历史长河中，这片沃土孕育了许多名人志士。唐代有进士韦昌明、尚书王汝砺；宋代有进士古成之；清代有贵州巡抚希深、直总督颜检及闽浙总督颜伯焘；现有革命先烈阮啸仙、黄居仁、刘琴西、黄克；当代有著名作家萧殷、书法家李震欧、书画家陈荣琚、影视作家谢逢松、画家刘大补、画家周世聪、火箭发射专家张其彬等。
