ANNOTE = {Except for one thing, this paper contains no new results and is only a collection of known facts. \\
The new result is in theorem 2: If for an autonomous switched system, that is nonZeno, we have that $x_0$ is asymptotically stable for each diff. equation, then the overall system is stable. \\
It seems, that the nonZeno condition is sufficient to allow doing the analysis for each dynamics separately. Now, this is either wrong, or it implies that the nonZeno condition is extremely restrictive. The example in \cite{Bran94} is therefore Zeno, or it would serve as counterexample for the only new result of this paper.}

ANNOTE = {The piecewise linear composition of linear subsystems does not inherit the observability and controllability properties of the single subsystems. The composition of unobservable subsystems can results in an observable system and vice-versa. The class of MLD systems is shown to be equivalent to the class of piecewise affine systems.\\
Defines the notion of \ii{incremental observability in $T$ steps} and gives several illustrative examples for different ``levels'' of observability of piecewise affine systems:
\begin{itemize}
\item There exist systems, that are not incrementally observable for small $T$'s but become observable for larger $T$'s. In fact an example is given, where the system is incrementally observable for arbitrarily large $T$.
\end{itemize}
Proposes algorithms for determining the observability of piecewise affine systems.
Introduces the equivalence between piecewise affine systems and MLD systems. The equivalence is only given with a suitable partition of the state and input space of the PWA system. Note also that MLD systems are in general equivalent to PWA systems and not piecewise linear (PWL) systems.

A new approach for fault detection and state estimation of hybrid systems is presented. The method relies on the modeling framework for hybrid systems introduced by \cite{BeMo99a}. This framework considers interacting propositional logic, automata, continuous dynamics and constraints. The proposed approach is illustrated by considering the fault detection problem of the three-tank benchmark system.}

ANNOTE = {Contributed Paper ECC99
This paper presents a new Branch and Bound tree exploring strategy for solving
Mixed Integer Quadratic Programs (MIQP) involving time evolutions
of linear hybrid systems. In particular, we refer to the
Mixed Logical Dynamical (MLD) models introduced by~\cite{BeMo99a},
where the hybrid system is described by linear equations/inequalities involving
continuous and integer variables. For the optimizations required by the controller synthesis and state estimation of MLD systems, the proposed algorithm reduces the average number of node explorations during the search of a global minimum. It also provides good local minima after a short number of steps of the Branch and Bound procedure.
