You can probably appreciate many of its shortcomings,which naturally leads to the question: ``What other spooling systems are out there (andwork with FreeBSD)?''</p><div class="VARIABLELIST"><dl><dt>LPRng</dt><dd><p><b class="APPLICATION">LPRng</b>, which purportedly means ``LPR: the Next Generation''is a complete rewrite of PLP. Patrick Powell and Justin Mason (the principal maintainerof PLP) collaborated to make <b class="APPLICATION">LPRng</b>. The main site for <bclass="APPLICATION">LPRng</b> is <a href="http://www.lprng.org/"target="_top">http://www.lprng.org/</a>.</p></dd><dt>CUPS</dt><dd><p><b class="APPLICATION">CUPS</b>, the Common UNIX Printing System, provides a portableprinting layer for <span class="TRADEMARK">UNIX</span>®-based operating systems. Ithas been developed by Easy Software Products to promote a standard printing solution forall <span class="TRADEMARK">UNIX</span> vendors and users.</p><p><b class="APPLICATION">CUPS</b> uses the Internet Printing Protocol (<acronymclass="ACRONYM">IPP</acronym>) as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The LinePrinter Daemon (<acronym class="ACRONYM">LPD</acronym>) Server Message Block (<acronymclass="ACRONYM">SMB</acronym>), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect) protocols are alsosupported with reduced functionality.
