X11 is anopen-source implementation of the X Window System that includes both <bclass="APPLICATION">Xorg</b> and <b class="APPLICATION"><spanclass="TRADEMARK">XFree86</span>™</b>. FreeBSD versions up to and includingFreeBSD 4.10-RELEASE and FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE will find the defaultinstallation to be <b class="APPLICATION"><span class="TRADEMARK">XFree86</span></b>, theX11 server released by The <span class="TRADEMARK">XFree86</span> Project, Inc. As ofFreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE, the default and official flavor of X11 was changed to <bclass="APPLICATION">Xorg</b>, the X11 server developed by the X.Org Foundation.</p><p>This chapter will cover the installation and configuration of X11 with emphasis on <bclass="APPLICATION">Xorg</b>.</p><p>For more information on the video hardware that X11 supports, check either the <ahref="http://www.x.org/" target="_top">Xorg</a> or <a href="http://www.XFree86.org/"target="_top"><span class="TRADEMARK">XFree86</span></a> web sites.</p><p>After reading this chapter, you will know:</p><ul><li><p>The various components of the X Window System, and how they interoperate.</p></li><li><p>How to install and configure X11.</p></li><li><p>How to install and use different window managers.</p></li><li><p>How to use <span class="TRADEMARK">TrueType</span>® fonts in X11.</p></li><li><p>How to set up your system for graphical logins (<b class="APPLICATION">XDM</b>).</p></li></ul><p>Before reading this chapter, you should:</p><ul><li><p>Know how to install additional third-party software (<a href="ports.html">Chapter4</a>).</p></li></ul><div class="NOTE"><blockquote class="NOTE"><p><b>Note:</b> This chapter covers the installation and the configuration of both <bclass="APPLICATION">Xorg</b> and <b class="APPLICATION"><spanclass="TRADEMARK">XFree86</span></b> X11 servers.
