=====How to sucessfully compile FAAC and mpeg4ip on Debian WOODY===== FAQ v1.0-requirements, pre-installation, suitable environment for building mpeg4iplet suppose you have installed a basic setup of debian woody (the actual 'stable'), updated it from network. First make sure you have a complete development system installed. The best way to achieve it is to run tasksel and pick 'C and C++' from developer section. it makes sure that no devel component is missing. additionaly you will need SDL libraries so do: apt-get install libsdl1.2-dev libsdl1.2debian-all apt-get install libsdl-net1.2-dev libsdl-image1.2-dev libsd-gfx1.2-devnote: you DO NOT NEED to install nasm, it would get you into big trouble so better not to have it installed- first steps, installing Lame and something about FAAC(extrernal audio encoders) possibly the easiest step on the rough way to get mp4live working is installinglame the mp3 encoder. you should get the source from sf.net, both 3.92.x and 3.93.x versions will do, normally you should face with no difficulity during lame compilation/installation.(lame soure: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=290)there are different versions of FAAC available for downloading. also a cvs snapshot is released on each sunday. i suggest to use release 1.20.1 of FAAC (against the documentation which recommends to use the newest version)you can try newer versions of FAAC but in that case later you will surely meet problems during compiling mp4live (usually 'unknown pragmas error') so let's stick to FAAC 1.20.1. Maybe it is hard to get it from offical sources but you can get it from my private mpeg4ip-faac collection from:http://mpeg4ip.netexpert.hu- avoiding future troubles, doing the tricky partthe default version of 'libtool' available for the stable debian (woody) is version 1.4 which is NOT suitable for configuring FAAC perfectly (a LOT of unknown options, variables used by FAAC which are unknown for libtool1.4). So we will do a little trick, we will install libtool 1.5 which is normally for debian Sid (testing version of debian yet). Either you can get the standalone .deb from debian.org's package search from the testing(sid) section:http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=libtool&searchon=names&subword=1&version=testing&release=all(it has no further dependencies), or you can modify your /etc/apt/sources.list by turning the 'stable' word after the path into 'sid' then apt-get update, apt-get install libtool, after it got installed you can reverse the changes youmade in your /etc/apt/sources.list (sid -> stable) and an additional apt-get update is recommended just to avoid possible future confusion around packages. Okay, so now you have a stable woody with 99% Woody packages exceptfor libtool which is from Sid (testing), you have the complete dev environmenteither gcc 2.95.x or gcc 3.0 maybe both (if u have installed 3.0 manualy). Both versions are ok for the compiling however 2.95.x is more reliable and compatible while 3.0 gives better cpu optimalisations.note: on a powerful cpu i couldnt realise any considerable speed difference with mp4live which could be derived from the version of gcc	so i simply used 2.95.x. Of course the choice is free :)<mpeg4ip author's note: we have seen significant improvment in the decoding routines with the 3.0 series of GCC, coupled with NASM. YMMV>- after the hard part, breath the main thing aliveextract faac (v1.20.1), chmod +x ./bootstrap (as the executable flag is accidentally missing)do ./bootstrap in faac folder (it should bring NO error messages thanks to our new libtool)do ./configuredo makedo make installnow faac is ready, you can test it by typing 'faac' into the shell, it brings the help so it is okay (compiling with libtool 1.4 it gives an error message as it cant load some of the shared libs which couldnt be compiled due to misconfiguration)NOTE: you MUST manualy copy the faac/include/faac.h to /usr/local/include/ as it is not done by the broken installer script but needed to complie mp4live (newer versions of FAAC are NOT affected by this small bug but they bring up more problematic things)<mpeg4ip author - if you use the faac patch file (faac_mpeg4ip_add.tar) before compiling, you won't have to copy the files. Ditto if you use a later version of faac>now let's compile mpeg4ip. you must decide if you want to use mp4live with gui or only in shell. If you want to have GUI after compilation you must install the GTK package (apt-get install libgtk1.2-dev) if not simply skipp this option.Extract the latest mpeg4ip tar (1.0rc3 at this moment) into a foldercd to it and do ./bootstarp after it simply type make and finally do make install. If all the above is correct mpeg4ip should compile without errors! If you got any problems, questions or remarks please feel free to write me a mail to hell@netexpert.huEOF
