<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2 Final//EN"><html><head><!-- Copyright 1997 The Open Group, All Rights Reserved --><title>uuto</title></head><body bgcolor=white><center><font size=2>The Single UNIX ® Specification, Version 2<br>Copyright © 1997 The Open Group</font></center><hr size=2 noshade><h4><a name = "tag_001_014_2752"> </a>NAME</h4><blockquote>uuto - send public system-to-system file copies (<b><a href="intro.html#tag_001_003_003">LEGACY</a></b>)</blockquote><h4><a name = "tag_001_014_2753"> </a>SYNOPSIS</h4><blockquote><pre><code>uuto <b>[</b>-mp<b>]</b><i> source-file</i>...<i> destination</i></code></pre></blockquote><h4><a name = "tag_001_014_2754"> </a>DESCRIPTION</h4><blockquote>The<i>uuto</i>utilitysends<i>source-files</i>to<i>destination</i>.The<i>uuto</i>utilityuses the<i><a href="uucp.html">uucp</a></i>facility to send files,while it allows the local system to control the file access.A<i>source-file</i>name is a pathname on the user's machine.<p>The files (or subtrees if directories are specified) are sent toa public directory (called<i>"PUBDIR"</i>;the actual location of<i>PUBDIR</i>is implementation-dependent)on<i>system</i>.Specifically, the files are sent to the directory:<pre><code><i>PUBDIR</i>/receive/<i>user</i>/<i>fsystem</i></code></pre><p>where<i>user</i>is the recipient, and<i>fsystem</i>is the sending system.<p>The recipient is notified bymail of the arrival of files.<p>Typical implementations of this utility require a communicationsline configured to use the <b>XBD</b> specification, <a href="../xbd/termios.html"><b>General Terminal Interface</b> </a> ,but other communications means may be used.On systems where there are no available communications means(either temporarily or permanently), thisutility will write an error message describing the problemand exit with a non-zero exit status.<p>The<i>uuto</i>utility cannot guarantee support for all character encodingsin all circumstances.For example,transmission data may be restricted to 7-bits by the underlyingnetwork, 8-bit data and filenames need not be portable tonon-internationalised systems, and so on.Under these circumstances, it is recommended that onlycharacters defined in theISO/IEC 646:1991 standard International Reference Version(equivalent to ASCII) 7-bit range ofcharacters be used and that only characters defined in the PortableFilename Character Set be used for naming files.</blockquote><h4><a name = "tag_001_014_2755"> </a>OPTIONS</h4><blockquote>The<i>uuto</i>utility supports the <b>XBD</b> specification, <a href="../xbd/utilconv.html#usg"><b>Utility Syntax Guidelines</b> </a> .The following options are supported:<p><dl compact><dt><b>-m</b><dd>Send mail to the sender when the copy is complete.<dt><b>-p</b><dd>Copy the source file into the spool directory before transmission.</dl></blockquote><h4><a name = "tag_001_014_2756"> </a>OPERANDS</h4><blockquote>The following operands are supported:<dl compact><dt><i>destination</i><dd>A string of the form:<pre><code><i>system-name</i>!<i>user</i></code></pre>where<i>system-name</i>is taken from a list of system names that<i><a href="uucp.html">uucp</a></i>knows about;
