Monitor. =20
Norton CrashGuard is a program which was released in =
the early=20
days of Windows 95 when users first started to =
experience the=20
wonderful new world of "Blue Screen" crashes (Blue =
Screen of=20
Death =96 BSOD), "Illegal Operations", etc... =
The idea=20
behind Norton CrashGuard, and umpteenth other programs =
of the=20
same ilk from other software authors, was that they =
would=20
watch out for conditions that might lead to crashes =
and would=20
either prevent crashes or would at the very least =
enable the=20
end-user to recover "gracefully" from a crash. =20
Hmmm! Well, reality caught up and once it became =
clear=20
that no program can ever successfully <U>always</U> =
prevent=20
crashes, companies like Symantec withdrew their =
products from=20
the market =96 in the case of Symantec CrashGuard was =
withdrawn=20
in September 2000 when it was no longer included as =
part of=20
SystemWorks 2001 (the "official line" is probably =
different to=20
what we say it =
is!).<BR><BR><B>Recommendation :</B><U>=20
</U><BR>Norton CrashGuard causes more problems than it =

problems,=20
conflicts with installation programs, freezes, general =
protection faults, and... increased system=20
crashes (!!!!!!). Our recommendation to =
anyone=20
still running Norton CrashGuard is that they should =
de-install=20
it (or at the very least disable it within the older =
versions=20
of Norton Utilities or SystemWorks).</FONT></TD></TR>

task which is=20
part of the Microsoft Index Server (NT4) or its =

the Microsoft Indexing Service (2000/XP). The =
Indexing=20
Service is a background process which catalogues files =
so that=20
you can then do searches for any piece of text across =
your=20
entire file system, or across a specific range of =
folders. The=20
Indexing Service works differently on server operating =
system=20
than it works on desktop operating systems. On=20
fileservers running Windows NT4/2000-server/XP-server, =
the=20
Indexing Service, which needs to be set up, =
configured, and=20
started, is used to construct library catalogues which =
end-users on the network can then search to find =
specific=20
documents =96 in short, it is an Intranet tool. On =
desktop=20
operating systems (Windows 2000 Professional, Windows =
XP Home=20
or Professional), the Indexing Service runs by default =
and=20
simply catalogues in the background all files on your =
PC so=20
that when you do a <B>"Search for Files or =
Folders"</B>, the=20
results come back much faster as Windows 2000/XP gets =
its=20
results from the catalogues (indexes) that were built =
by the=20
Indexing Service rather than through trawling your =
entire disk=20
for every search you=20

<BR>In most=20

however,=20
there are cases where CIDAEMON runs amok and consumes=20
excessive amounts of memory and CPU and the PC slows =
down as a=20

<I><B>Indexing=20

start</I>=20
service in "Services" in the Control Panel (WinNT4) /=20
Administrative Tools (Win2000/XP) should solve your=20
