A hardwaredevice may be supported with a character or block.Em device driver ,or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a.Em network interface driver .Block and character devices are accessed through files in the filesystem of a special type; see.Xr mknod 8 .Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocesscommunication facilities provided by the system; see.Xr socket 2 ..PpA hardware device is identified to the system at configuration timeand the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiledinto the system. When the resultant system is booted, theautoconfiguration facilities in the system probe for the deviceand, if found, enable the software support for it.If a device does not respond at autoconfigurationtime it is not accessible at any time afterwards. To enable a device which did not autoconfigure, the system will have to be rebooted..PpThe autoconfiguration system is described in.Xr autoconf 4 .A list of the supported devices is given below..Sh SEE ALSO.Xr intro 4 ,.Xr intro 4 ,.Xr autoconf 4 ,.Xr config 8 ..Rs.%T "Building 4.3 BSD UNIX Systems with Config (SMM:2)".Re.Sh LIST OF DEVICESThe devices listed below are supported in this incarnation ofthe system. Pseudo-devices are not listed.Devices are indicated by their functional interface.Occasionally, new devices of a similar type may be addedsimply by creating appropriate table entries in the driver;for example, new.Tn CS/80drives..Bl -column grf/ite -offset indentct 7946/9144 CS/80 cartridge tapedca 98644 built-in serial interfacedcl HP 98628A communications linkdcm HP 98642A communications multiplexerdma 98620B DMA controllerdv HP98730 ``DaVinci'' device interfacegb HP98700 ``Gatorbox'' device interfacegrf/ite Topcat/Gatorbox/Renaissance frame bufferhil HIL interfacehpib Built-in and 98625 HP-IB interfaceite HP Internal Terminal Emulatorle 98643 Lance-based ethernet interfacemem main memoryppi HP-IB printer/plotter interfacerb HP98720 ``Renaissance'' device interfacerd CS/80 disk interfacermp HP Remote Maintenance Protocol familyst CCS SCSI tape drivetc HP98544-98550 ``Topcat'' and ``Catseye'' device interface.El.Sh HISTORYThe.Tn HP300.Nm introappeared in.Bx 4.3 Reno .
