It is a retailer-driven initiative to produce an  architectural specification that is both operating system independent and language  neutral, for point of service devices used in the retail environment.</p>  <p>&nbsp;</p>  </font>  <li><strong>What are the goals of UnifiedPOS?</strong><br>  </li>  <font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>The goals of UnifiedPOS are to provide:</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>a)</strong> </font><font FACE="Arial"  SIZE="2">Common device architecture that is globally applicable and extends across  vendors, platforms, and retail formats.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>b)</strong> </font><font FACE="Arial"  SIZE="2">Standards for application to device interfacing in an operating system  independent and language neutral manner.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>c)</strong> </font><font FACE="Arial"  SIZE="2">Reduced implementation costs for vendors to support multiple (i.e., both Windows  COM and Java) platforms because they share the same architecture. This should produce  speed to market for innovation.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>d)</strong> </font><font FACE="Arial"  SIZE="2">An environment avoiding competition between standards while encouraging  competition among implementations.</p>  <p>&nbsp;</p>  </font>  <li><strong>Who is involved and how were they selected?</strong><br>  </li>  <p></font><font SIZE="3"><font face="Arial">Two formative meetings have been held that  were initiated by retailers from NRF and ARTS.</font></p>  <p><font face="Arial">Invitations were extended to parties involved in the POS standards  area.</font></p>  <p><font face="Arial">The organizations and companies represented are:</font></font><font  FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="3"></p>  <pre></font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2">	ARTS					Boscov&#146;s				Datafit	Epson					Fujitsu-ICL Systems		Honey Baked Hams	IBM Corporation				JCPenney	Microsoft 		Corporation	Montgomery-Ward			NCR Corporation		NRF	Research Computer Services	Sears				SUN Microsystems</pre>  <p>The organizational structure is still in process.</p>  <p>&nbsp;</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="3">  <li><strong>How do others (Europe / Japan and other geographies) become involved?</strong></li></ol><ol>  <p>The intention is for UnifiedPOS to be a worldwide initiative for all retail segments.  Parties interested in</font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"> becoming involved in UnifiedPOS  should contact the UnifiedPOS Executive Committee through its WEB site at </font><font  FACE="Arial" SIZE="2" COLOR="#0000ff"><a href="http://www.unifiedpos.org">http://www.unifiedpos.org</a></font><font  FACE="Arial" SIZE="2">. Existing OPOS and JavaPOS&#153; 1 committees outside the U.S.A are  urged to continue their work and are invited to agree locally how best to participate in  the UnifiedPOS initiative.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="3"><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="1"><p>1 </font><font  FACE="Arial" SIZE="2">JavaPOS is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc.</p>  </font><p>&nbsp;</p>  <li type="disc" value="5"><strong>What is the relationship of UnifiedPOS to the existing    JavaPOS and OPOS retail standards?</strong> </li></ol><dir>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>The UnifiedPOS specification will formalize and  document the underlying POS architecture, currently shared by both the JavaPOS and OPOS  standards, in an operating system independent and platform neutral manner.</p>  <p>Both the JavaPOS v1.4 and OPOS v1.4 standards will be &quot;grandfathered in&quot; as  conformant platform mappings of the UnifiedPOS specification. JavaPOS will be recognized  as the only UnifiedPOS-conformant operating system neutral Java language mapping. OPOS  will be recognized as the only UnifiedPOS-conformant language neutral COM mapping.  Additional UnifiedPOS mappings to platforms other than Java and COM will not be excluded  however.</p>  <p>Retail POS application developers and device service writers can therefore continue to  write their code in conformance with one or both of the JavaPOS or OPOS specifications,  and be confident that such code is also UnifiedPOS compliant.</p>  <p>&nbsp;</p></dir></font><ol>  <li type="disc" value="6"><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="3"><strong>What are the respective    roles of the OPOS, JavaPOS, and UnifiedPOS committees in formalizing standards for new    retail POS devices? </strong></font></li></ol><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="3"><dir>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>These roles are interrelated, and can best be  illustrated by describing the approval cycle for a newretail POS device.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>a) Generic Device Proposal Submitted</strong></p>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>A proposal for standardization of a new retail POS  device can be made by any organization active in the retail device space to the OPOS,  JavaPOS, or directly to the UnifiedPOS committees. Membership in ARTS and/or the NRF is  not required.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>b) UnifiedPOS Proposal Created</strong></p>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>The receiving committee will formalize the proposal  into UnifiedPOS format, and submit it for UnifiedPOS committee approval.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>c) UnifiedPOS Device Specification  Issued</strong></p>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>The UnifiedPOS committee will review (and possibly  modify) the generic device proposal, and publish a UnifiedPOS specification describing the  POS architecture of the new device (including its properties, events and supported  methods).</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>d) Platform-Specific Proposals  Submitted</strong></p>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>Both the OPOS and JavaPOS committees will take this  UnifiedPOS specification, and convert it into respectively, a COM and a Java platform POS  device standard.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>e) Platform-Specific Proposals Approved</strong></p>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>The UnifiedPOS committee will review (and possibly  modify) all such OPOS and JavaPOS proposals, before granting approval. This step ensures  that all new platform-specific device standards remain in conformance with the single  common POS architecture maintained by UnifiedPOS.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>f) Platform-Specific Standards Issued</strong></p>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>Once UnifiedPOS approval is granted, each of the  respective (OPOS/JavaPOS) committees will publish a platform-specific POS device  specification.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>g) Development Begins</strong></p>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>With the issuance of the platform-specific device  standard, then development of the retail applications that use the new device, and the  device services that support it, can begin on the platform.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p>&nbsp;</p></dir></font><ol>  <li type="disc" value="7"><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="3"><strong>Isn't there a danger that    implementing this extensive procedure for device standardization will stifle innovation? </strong></font></li></ol><ol>  <font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>On the contrary, those involved in the UnifiedPOS effort  believe that the benefits that will be realized by retailers, hardware manufacturers, and  software developers will spawn a significant effort to develop standards for ALL devices  utilized in a retail point of service environment. In fact, it is anticipated that the  UnifiedPOS procedures will accelerate the development of standards.</p>  <p>Consider the following:<br>  <strong><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2">a) Limited Number of New Device Proposals</font></strong></p>  <p>All device types that are defined in the 1.4 versions of the JavaPOS and OPOS standards  are &quot;grandfathered&quot; into UnifiedPOS, which means they require no additional  effort to make them UnifiedPOS conformant.</p>  <p>Current indications are that the number of POS device types which currently still await  UnifiedPOS standardization are not great enough to introduce substantial delays into the  approval cycle.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>b) Shared Committee Membership</strong></p>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>The UnifiedPOS, JavaPOS and OPOS core committees are  composed of members who in many cases serve on multiple committees. Such shared membership  is expected to expedite the approval process considerably.</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="2"><p><strong>c) Auto-Conversion</strong></p>  </font><font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>Both the JavaPOS and OPOS committees will be  investigating the possibility of using &quot;scripting tools&quot; to perform the bulk of  the conversions from a UnifiedPOS device specification into a platform-specific standard.  Such tools should also help expedite the new approval process.</p>  <p>&nbsp;</p>  </font><font FACE="Arial,Bold" SIZE="3">  <li type="disc" value="8"><strong>Who can submit proposals?</strong> </font><font    FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><p>Anyone interested in standardized devices in the retail    environment. This includes the OPOS and JavaPOS committees, retailers, device    manufacturers, ISVs, etc. Also, membership in ARTS or NRF is not a requirement.    Specifically,</p>    </font></li></ol><blockquote>  <font FACE="Arial" SIZE="2"><ul>    <li>Organizations planning to work on a standard for new devices are requested to notify the      UnifiedPOS committee. The UnifiedPOS committee will inform them of any other organizations      working in the same area</li>  </ul>  <ul>    <li>Organizations planning to work on a standard for new devices are requested to      collaborate with other organizations working in the same area, so that any divergent views      are resolved by the proposing organizations rather than being left for UnifiedPOS</li>  </ul>  <ul>    <li>Organizations setting up working groups to work on a standard for new devices are      requested to use UnifiedPOS to invite participation from other companies who may have      expertise to contribute, but may be excluded from the organization&#146; s normal work by      reason of geography or platform</li>    <p>&nbsp;</p>
