<html><head><title>Cliff Shaffer's Research Projects</title></head><body><h1 align="center">Research Projects</h1>Here is information and pointers to websites for some of the researchprojects that I have been involved with.<h2>Problem Solving Environments</h2><p>Most of my present work is related to Problem Solving Environments(PSEs). For more information about PSEs, see the<a href="../../www.cs.vt.edu/~pse">PSE Homepage</a>.We have an active research group with many ongoing projects.We always need students to work with us as Independent Study students,Graduate Research Assistants, or volunteers.<p>As part of our work, we are developing a component-basedcollaborative workspace in Java that serves as the foundation for buildingPSEs. See the <a href="../../simon.cs.vt.edu/sieve">Sieve</a>homepage for more information.<p>Our PSE group is active in Bioinformatics, in particular in the areaof Cell Cycle Modeling. At present there is no web site for this, butcome talk to me if you are interested in more information about thiswork. We collaborate with John Tyson in the Biology Department.We have funding from NSF, NIH, and DARPA.<p>The <a href="../../pse.cs.vt.edu/~mprg">S<sup>4</sup>W</a> project is a PSEfor wireless commications system design. This is an ongoing projectfunded by NSF.<p>To support work on aircraft design, we developed<a href="../../vtopus.cs.vt.edu/~agoel/vizcraft.html">VizCraft</a>.One product of this effort is a nice<a href="../../csgrad.cs.vt.edu/~agoel/parallel_coordinates/default.htm">parallel coordinates</a> applet.<p>See the PSE homepage for a list of other projects that we have workedon in the past.<p>One aspect of our PSE work is to support collaborative computing.An early effort for us in this area is<a href="../../pse.cs.vt.edu/JAMM">JAMM</a>: Java Applets MadeMultiuser. More recently, we have been working on<a href="../../csgrad.cs.vt.edu/~azafer/thesis/thesisPage.html">NetEdit</a>, a prototype collaborative text editor. I seek studentsto continue with this work.<h2>Computer Aided Education</h2>I have been involved in a number of projects related to computer aidededucation over the years. At the present time, I am not involved in afunded research project related to computer aided education. However,some of our earlier software development efforts are currently used bystudents, and I am actively seeking Independent Study students tocontinue them.<p>The first and most successful was<a href="../../geosim.cs.vt.edu/default.htm">Project GeoSim</a>: Simulationsfor Geography Education. This software has been used by many thousands ofstudents around the world, and is still actively used. I seekIndependent Study students to continue some of this work.<p><a href="../../simon.cs.vt.edu/SoSci">SABLE</a>: StatisticsActivity-Based Learning Environment is largely completed. I seekIndependent Study students to help with this work.<p><a href="../../simon.cs.vt.edu/Swan">Swan</a>: A Data Structure Visualization System was our initial prototype systemfor supporting data structure visualization. We are not presentlypursuing the Swan system.
