The transitive reduction of a <a href="directgraph.html" tppabs="http://hissa.nist.gov/dads/HTML/directgraph.html"><em>directed graph</em></a> G is the directed graph G' with the smallest number of <a href="edge.html" tppabs="http://hissa.nist.gov/dads/HTML/edge.html"><em>edges</em></a> such for every <a href="path.html" tppabs="http://hissa.nist.gov/dads/HTML/path.html"><em>path</em></a> between <a href="vertex.html" tppabs="http://hissa.nist.gov/dads/HTML/vertex.html"><em>vertices</em></a> in G, G' has a path between those vertices.
