PostgreSQL Authentication Module Min S. Kim <minskim@bawi.org> 15 January 2000 _________________________________________________________________ This document explains how to install and use mod_auth_pg. _________________________________________________________________ 1. Introduction PostgreSQL Authentication Module(mod_auth_pg) enables Apache to authenticate users with the information stored in PostgreSQL database. This module gets a username and password pair in the standard way or from a cookie, and you can choose your preferred method. 2. Requirements This module is tested with Apache-1.3.9 and PostgreSQL-6.4.2. * PostgreSQL * Apache HTTP Server * PostgreSQL Authentication Module 3. Installation At first, PostgreSQL should be installed. If you have installed it with rpm, make sure the package postgresql-devel was installed. After the installation of PostgreSQL, find out the path of header files and libraries. This information will be needed when you compile this module. Unzip and untar the module sources into any directory you want. $ tar xvzf AuthPG-1.2b1.tar.gz There are two ways to install AuthPG. The one is to make it a DSO module, and the other is to compile it into Apache. 3.1 To make AuthPG a DSO module If your Apache binary supports DSO modules, you can use AuthPG as a DSO module without recompile Apache. Open Makefile in the AuthPG directory, and edit the first few lines for it to reflect correct paths of Apache tools (APXS and APACHECTL) and PostgreSQL header files (INC) and library (LIB). Then you can obtain mod_auth_pg.so with make. To add this module to your Apache, consult Apache manuals. 3.2 To compile AuthPG into Apache In this way, mod_auth_pg.c will be moved into Apache source directory and compiled. Unzip and untar the Apache sources into any directory you want and move into src directory. $ tar xvzf apache_1.3.9.tar.gz $ cd apache_1.3.9/src Now you will edit Configuration.tmpl to give the needed information when you compile and link the module. Open it with your favorite text editor, and the first non-comment line must be EXTRA_CFLAGS=. This line and a few following lines are: EXTRA_CFLAGS= EXTRA_LDFLAGS= EXTRA_LIBS= EXTRA_INCLUDES= You will edit the last three lines. Write the PostgreSQL library directory after EXTRA_LDFLAGS=, and the header file directory and its parent directory after EXTRA_INCLUDES=. Write -lpq after line EXTRA_LIBS=, which means you will use the pq library. The edited lines are as follows(Assume that PostgreSQL libraries and header files are in the directory /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/include/pgsql respectively). EXTRA_CFLAGS= EXTRA_LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/lib EXTRA_LIBS=-lpq EXTRA_INCLUDES=-I/usr/local/include -I/usr/local/include/pgsql Move to the parent directory and run the script configure with your module source location as the value of the argument --add-module. The following example assumes that your module sources are located in /path/to. $ cd .. $ ./configure [your options] --add-module=/path/to/mod_auth_pg.c Replace [your options] with other options of configure. For the detail about available options, consult the file INSTALL in Apache top directory or run the following command. $ ./configure --help Go on as you install apache without this module. 4. Usage There are two ways to use mod_auth_pg. The one is to make .htaccess file in the directory which requires user authentication, and the other is to edit httpd.conf. 4.1 .htaccess Apache doesn't recognize .htaccess at default. You must edit httpd.conf to enable .htaccess. Open httpd.conf and you will find the line <Directory /any/path>. Between <Directory /any/path> and </Directory> there is a line which starts with AllowOverride. The value of this item should contain AuthConfig or All. Edit and save it. Now restart Apache or give the signal with kill to reload httpd.conf. Open .htaccess in the directory requiring user authentication, and write whatever directives you need. AuthName my_auth AuthType Basic AuthPGHost my.database.server AuthPGDatabase my_db AuthPGUserTable user_table require valid-user If you specify the name of host after AuthPGHost directive, Apache will try to connect to PostgreSQL using internet domain socket, which means you should run postmaster with -i option, and edit configuration file to allow this type of access. When omit AuthPGHost directive, postmaster and httpd should run on the same machine. Consult mod_auth_pg.html for the usage of each directive. 4.2 httpd.conf Specify the directory requiring user authentication using <Directory /my/directory> in httpd.conf. The directives between opening and closing Directory tag are the same ones as in .htaccess. If you want user authentication in /my/secret, insert the followings into httpd.conf <Directory /my/srcret> (the same directives as in .htaccess) </Directory>
