.TH cooledit 1 "27 October 2001".\"SKIP_SECTION".SH NAMEcooledit-3.17.5 \- Full featured text editor for the X Window System, Version 11..\"SKIP_SECTION".SH USAGE.B cooledit [-AabCEhiPsSUVv?] [options] [[+<line>] [<path>/]<file>] [[+<line>] [<path>/]<file>] ....SH DISCLAIMERThe information in this file is provided without warrantyfor its accuracy or completeness. Use of this file or itsinformation is entirely at your own risk..SH DESCRIPTION.LPThis is a portable, fast X Window text editorwith beautiful 3D widgets. It requires only the X11library to run. The engine is the same as that used forthe internal editor of the .B Midnight Commander and hence.B cooledit represents a X Window version of that editor. The library thatcomes with .B Cooledit is now standalone. You can use it to write your own .B Cool applications. Check out the included programs .B Coolman and .BR "Smalledit"..\".\"DONT_SPLIT".SH OPTIONS.TP.I "-d, -display <display>"The X server and display you would like to display to..TP.I "-g, -geom, -geometry <geometry>"Main window size and position on the screen, eg .BR "cooledit -geom 630x490+95+5". If .B cooledit is envoked with the size, the size will be saved on exit. If cooledit is envoked with the position, the position will be saved on exit. .B cooledit -geom + envokes the default size..TP.I "-lines <n>"Size of the edit window in text lines..TP.I "-columns <n>"Size of the edit window in mean character widths..TP.I "-vis, --visual <visual-class> (experimental)"Without this option, the visual class is selected from a list of preferredclasses and depth ranges. Use .B cooledit -vis help for more information..TP.I "-C, -cmap, --own-colormap (experimental)"Force use of own colormap. If .B Cooledit is started after other colour-hungry application, and you are using one of the colour-palette visuals (like PseudoColor) the colors may look poor. In this case, use this option for a separate colour palette. .B (Contact me if you are forced to use this option.).TP.I "-defcmap, --default-colormap (experimental)"Force use of default colormap. If .B Cooledit is started with a visual other than the default, thenit creates its own colormap. This overrides this behaviour..B (Contact me if you are forced to use this option.).TP\fI--edit-bg <nn>\fPEditor background colour. Rather edit your \fB~/.cedit/.cooledit.ini\fP file, look for the option \fBoption_editor_bg_normal\fP and others. This can be\fB0\fP to \fB26\fP. Useful options are probably only \fB1\fP and \fB0\fPfor dark blue and black..TP.I "-bg, --background-color <color>"Specifies the background color for a solid background. If .I <color> is .I igloo (default) then a background color is not used, and the background is set to the igloo logo..TP.I "-R, --foreground-red <value>"Red component of actual widget colors (buttons, windows), default: 0.9..TP.I "-G, --foreground-green <value>"Green component, default: 1.1..TP.I "-B, --foreground-blue <value>"Blue component, default: 1.4..TP.I "-f, -fn, -font <font-name>"The font you would like to use. (See \fBFONTS\fP below.) If \fI<font-name>\fP is \fIdefault\fP then the default font 8x13bold isinvoked. If \fI<font-name>\fP is \fI-?\fP or \fI-h\fP then alist of example fonts are printed. If \fI<font-name>\fPis a number, then the example font of that number is used,eg \fBcooledit -font 3\fP.TP\fI-no-fontset, --no-fontset\fPTurns off use of font sets under X. X has two methods ofdrawing fonts: the old "fontstruct" or "raw" method and thenew font set method. The font set method properlyinterprets locales and their characters sets and is requiredfor creating an X Input Method (for inputting internationalcharacters). Unfortunately, not all X servers understand UTF-8(Unicode) encoding, hence the old "raw" method may berequired when used with \fI--utf8-interpretation\fP..TP\fI-utf8, --utf8-interpretation\fPShould be used in conjunction with \fI--no-fontset\fP ifrequired. Enable UTF-8 interpretation. Use for Unicodeencoded files..TP\fI--anti-aliasing\fPThis is depreciated, use \fIfont-name\fP\fB/3\fP instead..TP\fI--interchar-spacing <n>\fPAdd extra pixels of space between each character. This optionworks with \fI--anti-aliasing\fP only. (Default is 0.).TP\fI--interwidget-spacing <n>\fPSpacing between widgets in dialog boxes. Make larger fora more spacious. Different defaults for different looks..TP\fI--look [gtk|cool|next]\fP\fBCooledit\fP can emulate the look of a \fBGtk\fP or \fBNeXT\fPapplication. \fBGtk\fP is now the default, although you can invokethe old look with \fBcooledit --look cool --widget-font default\fP.There is some complexity in setting options for looks: certainsettings, like \fI--interwidget-spacing\fP and \fI--font\fP are savedon exit, hence switching looks may inherit incorrect settings. Notethat the default \fBGtk\fP font for real \fBGtk\fP applications is\fB-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*\fP,which is very close to\fB-winfonts-arial-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*\fP..TP\fI--red-first\fPFor LCD displays use R-G-B pixel ordering. (Default.).TP\fI--blue-first\fPFor LCD displays use B-G-R pixel ordering. Try both of theseoptions and see which looks better..TP.I -S, --suppress-load-filesDon't load saved desktop on startup..TP.I -U, --suppress-load-optionsDon't load any saved options on startup..TP.I -E, -no-overrideCommand line must not override any optionsalready set in the initialisation file..TP.I -I, --use-initialisation-file <file>Use alternative intialisation file. Default: ~/.cedit/.cooledit.ini.TP.I -i, --all-charactersDisplay characters outside of locale if there are glyphs for them. This does not work if you didnot specify the font completely - \fBCooledit\fP would then be using a fontset (which does not allow non-locale characters to be printed).See \fBFONTS\fP for more information. Default:display only \fBisgraph\fP(3) characters - i.e. charactersprintable under the current locale..TP.I --word-wrap <length>The maximum length of a line. See the next two options..TP.I --type-writerThis option causes a newline to be inserted when the line you are typing becomes longer than .I --word-wrap length..TP.I --auto-paragraphThis is a more advanced form of the option above: it causes the entire paragraph to be reformatted with each edit of a paragraph. See .B WORD PROCESSOR MODE below..TP.I -t, -tab, --tab-spacing <spacing>Interpret the tab character as being the length of <spacing> characters. Default is 8. You should avoid usingother than 8 since most other editors and text viewersassume a tab spacing of 8. Use .B -fake-half-tabs to simulate a smaller tab spacing..TP.I -s, -space, --space-filled-tabsNever insert a tab space. Rather insert spaces (ascii 20h) to fill to thedesired tab size..TP.I -nospace, --no-space-filled-tabsDefault..TP.I -a, --auto-indentPressing return will tab across to match the indentationof the first line above that has text on it (default)..TP.I -noautoi, --no-auto-indentTurn off auto tabs..TP.I -b, --backspace-through-tabsMake a single backspace delete all the space to the leftmargin if there is no text between the cursor and the leftmargin..TP.I -noback, --no-backspace-through-tabsDefault..TP.I -half, --fake-half-tabsThis will emulate a half tab for those who want to programwith a tab spacing of 4, but do not want the tab size changedfrom 8 (so that the code will be formatted the same when displayedby other programs). When editing between text and the left margin, moving and tabbing will be as though a tab space were4, while actually using spaces and normal tabs for an optimal fill. When editing anywhere else, a normal tab is inserted..TP.I -no-half, --no-fake-half-tabsTurn off half tabbing..TP.I -toolbarEdit windows have a toolbar on the left: default..TP.I --no-ximDisable XIM support..TP.I -no-toolbarEdit windows do not have a toolbar..TP.I -m, --minimal-main-windowThis is used internally to create a new main window with one edit windowwhen the user activates `New Main Window' from the Window menu. Youcan also use it to force the main window to be just large enough tohold all the sub-windows..TP.I -A, -save-setupSave options on exit (default)..TP.I -P, -no-save-setupDon't save options on exit..TP.I -W, --whole-chars-search <chars>Characters that constitute a whole wordwhen searching, default: 0-9a-z_ (typed out in full).TP.I -w, --whole-chars-move <chars>Characters that constitute a whole wordwhen moving and deleting, default: 0-9a-z_; ,[](){} (typed out in full).TP.I -verbosePrint info about X intialisation..TP.I -h, -H, -?, --helpPrint out commandline options summary..TP.I -V, -v, --versionPrint out version number..PP.SH Commandline examples.TP.I cooledit +10 hello.c -S -geom +Start cooledit with one file, with minimum geometry, with cursor at line 10..PP.TP.I cooledit hello.c program.cStart cooledit with two files, the file .I hello.c being the current file. The previous files are also loadedunderneath these two files..PP.SH MAILING LISTTo join, email .B majordomo@mail.obsidian.co.za with the line .B subscribe cooledit in the body of the message. Patches, and anything you would like to say about cooledit, are welcome at .BR "cooledit@mail.obsidian.co.za "..PP.SH FeaturesCooledit supports multipleedit windows and has all the conveniences of MSW/MAC text editors. The interface has a beautiful 3D look and feel vaguely like Motif. It has an extensible file size limit of 64Mb and edits binary filesflawlessly. Besides typical functions of a basic editor, cooledithas the following features: a builtin Python interpretor for Pythonprogrammability; spell-check as you type with red wavy lines;graphical C/C++ debugger; Key for key undo; shift-arrowtext highlighting; macro recording; a generic shell executionfacility that can be used to run make, sort or any user definedshell function on text or editor files; easy key redefinition;mouse text highlighting; XDND drag and drop; double-click on a gccerror message to go immediately to the file and line number;desktop and cursor position memory; easy window cycling; comprehensive search and replace; input histories; and lots more. The editor is very easy to use and requires no tutoring. To see what keys do what, just consult the appropriatepull-down menu.A complete set of key definitions follows..PP.SH HINT MESSAGES\fBCooledit\fP displays a new help message on the title bar every2 minutes. All features not obvious from the user interface aredocumented by these hint messages, so reading them should be ofconsiderable help to those who prefer not to read this man page.To look at the complete list of hint messages, see the
