<P>1) Check the sample project VIEWEX with VC 5. Search under help, CSplitterWnd and you'll find it. There is some stuff in the knowledge base on this - also creating nested splitters. 
<BR>2) You'll probably want to create a Static splitter, not dynamic, if you're using your own view. (CreateStatic() method.)
<BR>3) Remember to set the active view (SetActiveView) so MFC has a view to work with. 
<BR>4) Check out Kruglinski (Inside VC) and Prosise (Programming Win 95 with VC) for more reference.
<BR>My guess is you're not doing things right in the CMDIChildWnd.OnCreateClient() (MDI app) and the samples I mentioned should clear it up.
